1. When I was a child my favorite toy was…
Mud. Definitely mud, although my dolls came in a close second. Much to my mother's horror, I made all kinds of things out of mud and then wanted to keep them in the house. I made a box of "chocolates". I made tiny people and tiny mud furniture. There was a mud flat along the shoreline of the pond in August, and I would go out there and completely cover my body with mud and run around.
2. When I was a child my favorite game was…
My favorite game was Boggle. I was totally obsessed with it. I liked it because I could play it by myself when other people didn't want to play it with me. I liked it because it was "educational", which meant that my mother almost always would agree to play just one game with me. I also liked it because I could use it to make a point to the adults in the family who thought I was "too smart for my own good."
3. The best film I saw when I was a child was…
Huh. Answering this question is strangely difficult for me. I wasn't a huge fan of movies as a kid, and I guess they still have limited appeal to me. But I do remember that I eagerly awaited the yearly broadcast of Wizard of Oz. It was less about the movie than it was that I absolutely loved Judy Garland's singing.
4. I do it very seldom, but I like…
Drawing and painting. I have managed to do some painting this past week, but usually I go months without finding the time for it. And then when I do find the time for it, I get very discouraged because my skills have gone slack.
5. If I had a very good mood, I would do…
Dancing or going on an adventure. Sunday morning the boys and I turned on the radio and just had a great time dancing around the kitchen while we made breakfast.
6. If it weren’t late I would…
work. There is a certain point in the night in which I become incapable of working even if I have important deadlines to meet.
7. My favorite musical instrument is…
The violin. It doesn't matter what genre the music is, if it has a violin I will stop to listen. There is something about the sound of the violin that lifts me out of myself. I can't play it (or any instrument, for that matter, as I am completely incapable of keeping rhythm), but I love the violin.
8. I like to read secretly… (what?)
Uhh. I don't know. I always have some way of justifying what I'm reading even if I consider it to be trash. I do hide books that I don't want to discuss with others, so I guess that counts. But those are secret, so I'm not sharing.
9. If I had a perfect childhood I would become a…
I'm not really seeing the connection here. I guess the assumption is that imperfect childhood hinders our ability to BECOME. I'm not really sure that's true. What is the perfect childhood? I always distrust people who claim they had one.
10. If it weren’t a stupid idea, I would write (create)…
an artist colony where people could come and be creative whenever they wanted and leave whenever the atmosphere ceased to appeal to them. I want to be Mrs. Ramsay from To the Lighthouse.
11. The music that improves my mood is…
ABBA. Seriously. There is no way I can be unhappy when I'm listening to ABBA. This is why even though everyone I know hates Mama Mia with a passion, I can say with a straight face that I totally LOVE that movie. I actually do crank whatever ABBA song fits my current emotional state and then run around my house like I'm living in my own little ABBA musical. And I did that regularly BEFORE Meryl Streep did.
12. I like to wear… (what?)
I can't improve on luminousx's answer. I love costumes. After I learned to sew, my mother started giving me fabric on the condition that I use it to "make something that could be worn in public." This was a necessary condition, since I spent most of my teens dressing like Emily Dickinson. I had an orange and white striped sheet that I had fashioned into a full length cloak, and most days I came home from school, put on my cloak and went out into the fields to wander around.
