In honor of the RENT movie, and in honor of me probably not keeping AOL much longer (huzzah!) because it hardly works on my Mac, I have a new SN: IgnitetheAir4U. Add me. If you want to ( Read more... )

I did Hobbes and Rousseau last year in Politics, Leviathan is pretty intimidating to read. Hobbes wasn't all bad, he did say that because we gave the leviathan the power to rule, we actually had all the power. I don't remember much Rousseau, which is very bad since my course starts on Mon.

Yeah I know, I just also like...really don't like the writing style. He defines words repeatedly and just states facts, it seems like.

PS your icon's awesome.

Ich bin sehr mude und sehr...emm...hungry.

I can totally be both at once. And now I've had food. And not sleep.

We read Hobbes last year in gov, and what I got from it was that there are inherent risks in living in a "state of nature" aka how we lived before official, semi-universal government (or universal for the people in our vicinity that we come into contact with, it's different now with all the globalness we got goin' on) was developed, and so the concept of a government or seat of power is a contract where people willingly give up their freedoms for a sense of security- but it's just what it is, a contract, that can be broken if the masses will it, because the government only has whatever power the people grant them.

But then, I do have a flair for missing the point, so I could be way off base :P Or we could have read different things, he kind of contradicts himself a lot.

But I mean, he was a pretty pessimistic dude, no argument there. And Rousseau does rock. Alliteration! Don't you think Rousseau rocks would be a good band name?

I'm taking American Government and Politics this year. We were comparing him to John Locke yesterday. I mentioned that I thought that Locke was more intelligent and empathetic. My teacher then said: EH, he's just a capitalist.

Oh these NYC private schools...
