I don't usually comment on politics here, but something related to the recent Spitzer scandal rubbed me the wrong way. In an article about how parents should explain the scandal to their children, there was this quote:

I also find it interesting that she's assuming the injection of monetary gain into sexual behavior, not vice versa. It's a commonplace that prostitution often arises out of women needing money rather desperately and having to resort to prostutitution to get it - often after other methods have been exhausted. Kuriansky implies that prostitution is not simply a goal but a deliberate and favorable one in the minds of these women, and while that could be true for a small segment of the population, it's fallacious to apply it to the whole.
