Day 1 - Favorite Incarnation of the Doctor
For years I couldn’t decide which was my favorite Doctor. Every time I watched series 1, I was adamant that Nine was my favorite. Every time I watched series 2 through 4 I was sure that it didn’t get any better than Ten.
I started watching Doctor Who because of Christopher Eccleston. One of the reasons I stayed with it was David Tennant. He really is brilliant to watch and he got to tell marvelous stories. But since Tennant has left the show, I find myself going back to the first series more and more.
Emotionally damaged from the war, the ninth Doctor is prickly and condescending. The “stay away from me” vibes roll off him in waves. He looks imposing and unwelcoming, but you quickly get past the façade to the wounded soldier underneath. He is annoyed easily, but hard to anger and quick to forgive. He’s gentle and loves music of all kinds. He is steady and predictable, thoughtful and loyal.
Ten is the polar opposite. He’s jovial, energetic, and fun. He’s social and makes friends easily. But darkness and anger linger just below the surface and woe to the person who triggers it. Ten angers easily and he doesn’t forgive lightly. He also has a tendency to be a bit thoughtless which hurts his companions more than any “stupid ape” comment Nine would come up with.
The Doctor is a beautiful concept and such a great character, but his ninth incarnation is the one I would most want to travel with.
