Well, compared to the break-ups YOU attempted in High School, I damn well imagine they're better now.

Better to have done it sooner than later, yeh. Out of the way. The awkward bit is that first couple-few weeks where space is given and things renegotiated. Like, you have another possibility lined up, sure, but it would be a bit cruel to leap into those arms straightaway.
