I'm sure you've heard about Cyclone Yasi, which is due to hit Queensland (my state) at around 11pm tonight. Here's a helpful graphic to demonstrate why it's being described as the worst cyclone we've ever seen.
I was looking for your town on the news but it's mostly going to miss you, isn't it?
I've got family in Townsville so starting to get a bit worried for them. but man, just when it seems like nothing else can happen, she just brings a crazy cyclone into it.
The actual "cyclone" itself is going to hit up between Innisfail and Townsville (where I also have friends and family :/) but because Yasi is so big the damage from the wind is going to be much more widespread.
DAMN EVERYTHING it's like a conspiracy re the high tide and everything ): how are you going to like, preparations and everything? you likely to lose power? IT'S REALLY SCARY and I'm not even in any danger, just watching it on the news. ):
Preparations are alright, they mostly consist of locking down anything that could blow away from the yard. We aren't in the "Brown Zone" which is the area of Mackay expected to flood, but my uncle next door has sandbags which we can use if things start to get... damp. They've told us to expect to lose power for a couple of days, just to make sure people are ready for it if it happens, you know? We're all stocked up on ice and tinned food and powered milk, and our stove is gas so we can heat water even if the power does go off. We're actually incredibly lucky because Yasi was headed south the first few days before it changed direction and went north.
Thank you for your thoughts. So far it seems like we're going to be alright in my town, but some of the evac centres up north (and closer to the cyclone) are full already and they are having to turn people away. :( Only tomorrow will tell how bad it is.
The damage was minimal! There are some schools and businesses closed because there is power out in some parts of town, but for the most part we were really, really lucky. :)
I did! I am! Some wind, some rain and it was over. The clean-up up north is going to be awful but my town escaped relatively unharmed (some branches down and power out in some spots.) *hugs*
