Facebook is no longer available

Looks like Facebook has decided to no longer allow people to use their platform without a cellphone number. It says I have abused their platform with spam which doesn't seem correct and all my other accounts on Facebook seem locked down unless I add a cellphone number. I looked at the competition for social media and chose Instagram for a new ( Read more... )

I left Facebook quite a while ago. I have a cellphone number I could use, and I'm not terribly worried about who they might want to sell my personal information to. But social media seems to be this game where somebody posts a subject for comment, and when you offer a comment they totally it and start judging you for totally unrelated stuff. It took a long time to sink in, but I finally realized that game of setting myself up to be judged by people who hold no moral high ground was totally not fun.

So, no more social media for me. But wouldn't it be something if, after all the wandering to different platforms, we all wound up back here on LJ? Guess we didn't know when we had it good.

Lol, yeah, an LJ revival would be cool and a bit ironic. A couple years back I decided to use Facebook with no opinions showing

Well, that sucks. A lot of people I know are leaving Facebook for different reasons as well.

Yep... A high level of complete disregard to the disruption a Facebook boot has on people and especially when it is unexplained or undeserved (pink balloons getting a month ban for nudity for a very popular Facebook friend)

I'm glad you are getting the word out. Sites that force such things are out of line. I also don't like that the Google-owned version of YouTube is forcing people to use cel-phone verification now also ;/
Thank goodness for registering long ago, but who knows if they'll break that too... plus I feel bad for any new registrants.

Back the year Google bought YouTube, an article listed the worst 40-something data breaches over the previous year. 100% of these breaches were by Google-owned companies and about 1/3 were connected with the use of gmail which YouTube, for a few months, insisted YouTube users to use for verification. It was at this point that I decided to never use Google-owned stuff in a logged-in form including YouTube. At that point I had already figured out how to log in to YouTube without Gmail but I still only logged in a couple times since then. New to YouTube is a requirement to specify if your video is for adults or children and it might decide for you. If your video is designated ^for children^, you will no longer be monetized for that video and it will not be used in search results so YouTube can make sure they are not sued again for tracking the activities of children. Of course anything animated or animal-related could be assumed by YouTube's algorithms to be ^for children^. A lot of my search results for building construction get ads for ( ... )

And just another reason to hate Facebook.

As if the list of reasons wasn't long enough! I wonder how many "data breaches" are actually social media companies intentionally selling personal data?

I guess it would be mindboggling.

Facebook Gone Down onedotmedia December 3 2019, 11:37:54 UTC
Facebook Messenger has suffered a major outage, leaving users unable to send or receive messages. It is one of several Facebook apps to experience difficulties, with both the main Facebook app and Facebook-owned Instagram also going down.It is not yet clear what caused the issue, though it is the latest in a series of significant outages for the social media giant.
