THE HOBBIT OMG

Dec 14, 2012 13:04

Copying and pasting my comments from ohnotheydidnt because I basically wrote an essay.

I really liked the prologue with the Dwarves (it seemed a bit of a nod to the other LOTR movies with their prologues), but the panning shots were kind of blurry so I couldn't see as much of the Dwarf city as I wanted to. Hopefully they have more time to work on the dragon, because the tail end of it looked pretty cheap imo.

(Also, can I just say, THRANDUIL ON A FUCKING MOOSE. That GQ motherfucker right there.)

I loved how Frodo and Bilbo's interactions took place on the morning that FOTR began. It was great to see Frodo nailing up the "party business" sign - but how does Elijah Wood look even younger now than he did then?? Magic.

Martin Freeman was fucking PERFECT as Bilbo. I know he's a racist asshat or w/e, so that sucks, but he fit so well into the role. His mannerisms, his comic timing, everything was flawless. He got a lot of laughs from our audience.

I still wouldn't be able to tell half of the Dwarves apart, but Thorin looked great. Very majestic and kingly. Fili and Kili were both excellent as well (although I remembered halfway through that they both die at the end, along with Thorin, and got sad). I thought Balin was also excellent as well. They didn't do much with Gloin, but you can tell he's Gimli's dad, lol. I hope they'll have him mention Gimli at some point.

I wasn't too crazy about Radagast - he was a bit too hokey for me - but I'm so glad we got to see the fortress of Dol Guldur. I hope they do a lot more with that in the next two movies.

I wish we could have seen more of the Elven warriors who rode down the Wargs! We heard the horn call that was recognizable from the Elves' arrival at Helm's Deep, but you could barely see them and I'm sure their costumes were amazing. When they showed Elrond later, his armor was on fucking point.

(Also, I might be mistaken, but were Azog and his followers convening on Weathertop?)

Everyone in my theater went "Ohhhhhhh shit!!!" when Saruman showed up, lol.

Is it just me, or were they basically just campaigning for a costuming Oscar by having Cate Blanchett prance around the White Council in her dress? Don't get me wrong, the dress was breathtakingly gorgeous, but it was a bit lulworthy. And there were some shots where she was standing with the dress perfectly arranged around her that were like, really now?!

Stone giants should have been in the extended edition, but the visuals were great, etc.

I thought the movie started to drag when they got to the goblin cave, but then they brought Gollum in and holy SHIT, that scene was amazing. The CGI was fucking incredible - and Andy Serkis's expressions were perfect! Everything about that scene was wonderful. Still was not a fan of the goblins, though. I thought the escape scene was a bit ridiculous.

I LOVED the scenery shot at the end where you could see the Lonely Mountain. Interestingly, it was Mirkwood in between that really caught my attention - it all just looked so realistic, like Middle-earth was actually a real place. So basically I was like, "Fuck my life, I need to move to New Zealand."

So, in conclusion, I LOVED it and the only serious misstep imo was not having enough of racist party elf king Thranduil (and none of my sweet prince Legolas). ♥
