are words important enough to devote your life to them? the novel is dead. poetry is dead. what stands in its place is the blogosphere and millions of children who have learned the syntax and synecdoche of the internet, who can interpret it and tell you the subtext of youtube, who do not have the TIME to bother with bound pages. all of my gifts ( Read more... )

It's hard to imagine that the novel is dead when bookstores are selling so many. I do admit that the internet and such has atrophied the standard attention span, but when I look at the people I knew in middle and high school who read books, I think those same kinds of people read books now, as well. The webbotube is a powerful draw, but I think that the ones who eschew books completely in favor of the blagoblag are the ones who would have, previously, ignored print in favor of television.

Yeah, I'm just starting to get my crap together to apply to grad school as well. It's a stressful but kinda neat thing to think about. Good luck! :D

arguably. the bookstores are selling less and less. and what they are selling is mostly not what I would call novels, not the novels that will live for a hundred years. it's not that far-fetched; before the novel, poetry reigned supreme for two thousand years+, and in a couple hundred years, that standard mode of literature has been so overtaken by novels that it is reduced to something that you're forced to read in school. it still EXISTS, but it is no longer vital or life-changing. it's an acquired taste because no one knows how to read poetry any more. the thing is, i am not condemning the internet or teevee. i'm simply saying that, at 22, i see myself stepping on the path of becoming a dinosaur.

you can't know all the outcomes of your actions. follow your bliss, and trust your instincts will bear fruit.
