Cheating with Guiding Light...

I've been watching soap operas, off and on, for as long as I can remember.    I've always been an ABC girl.    And, believe me, the distinction matters in soap viewing.    I will never forget Luke typing in the password "ice princess" in the last few seconds to save Port Charles (and the world) from the being frozen.    (Sure, it sounds ridiculous ( Read more... )

70th anniversary, harley, crystal chappell, a very special episode, otalia, beth ehlers, guiding light

The end of that episode really looked like a 'fare thee well' type of thing, which, as you said, is very bittersweet considering the current situation.

I must admit to knowing next to nothing about Harley, as she didn't really featured much in the Otalia story before she left, but I'm all for there being at least one intelligent and interesting Cooper in the world (Sorry, Buzz, I like you but you lose points for not smacking some sense into Frank's head last week). Plus, I just loved the way she said 'have some tea' in the first clip *g*.

It's such a shame that CBS doesn't cherish its history. How else do you cancel a show that's been around for 72 years? (So typical of the American way... where in a 100 years you can have a half dozen different buildings go up in one spot, instead of one building that's lasted a century or more.) Things would be better all-around if we all just had some tea.

Love that episode though. And Irna and her 'sidekick' Rose were totally femslashable.

Absolutely. I was watching it and thinking, 'well, she'd certainly approve of the Otalia storyline'. And I can just imagine her 'No, you should gasp' in a different context *g*.

Wow, that was great. What was Harley's story? Why did she leave?

Harley and big brother Frank arrived in Springfield in 1987. The Coopers grew from there, but Harley has always been the central Cooper. Beth Ehlers has come and gone a few times. But no one else has ever been Harley. I don't think they'd dare. So, at the moment, Harley is living in Greece with her two sons. Daisy (of the annoying texting in church) is her daughter ( ... )

Nah, that's perfect. Fills in a lot of missing background information. I was actually watching the Otalia clips you had in the previous post. It gives me a better sense of Natalia's character and puts a lot of things in perspective. I think that quietly confident and thoughtful part of Natalia got drowned under the enormous pressure of Fratalia. It's good to see her break out of that shell again this past week. They need to go back to some of their amazing banter.

If GL really does go the way of the dodo, my sister and I will miss making fun of Reva; we had a field day when Josh cloned Reva. Based on Reva's ability to suck the life and willpower out of any man she hooked up with, my sister came up with the term The Hoover Maneuver. ("Reva's doing the Hoover Maneuver to Alan this week.") Good times!

Harley really WAS the braintrust of the Coopers...it's like the collective family IQ dropped about 75 points when she left.

I often go back and forth on which was the worst storyline ever... the cloning or Reva going back in time through the portrait. It's almost a good thing that show is ending. Just imagine the depths they'd plumb for the next decade of Reva.

I think I miss "Harley's Angels" the most. There doesn't seem to be much interaction outside of couples these days. I'm crazy about Otalia, but I really miss Harley and her gal pals solving crime.

That sounds awesome. I've been scouring YouTube looking for old Guiding Light clips because, like you, I was always an ABC soaps girl. (I think One Life to Live's underground city of Eterna might give the cloning storyline a run for worst soap storyline ever. Lol.)

Sadly enough, it was hearing that GL might be canceled back in February that made me start watching. I got hooked. Then it got canceled. *sigh* Anyway, thanks for sharing the great posts of YouTube links and your knowledge of the show's history, especially Olivia's. It's very much appreciated. :)

I still love the lost city of Eterna storyline... it was so bad that it was almost good. The Reva ones were just plain bad. And I'll always think highly of OLTL for hiring Michael Zaslow (David Renaldi) back when he was dying. That's the one thing I have a hard time forgiving GL for... for firing him when he got too sick. After he'd given them over 20 years, off and on but mostly on, as Roger Thorpe. Roger Thorpe was one of the best 'shades of grey' characters ever.

I'm so glad you've enjoyed all the clips. How did we ever survive before there was youtube and the like?!
