First, thanks to the people who reassured me about this episode. Although it wasn't perfect (and it was riddled with plot holes), I really enjoyed it. Yay! Happy birthday to me!
Some random thoughts behind the cut (beware for mild spoilers):
*Eleven still isn't quite clicking for me as a character, but I'm warming to him a bit. Said warmth didn't stop me from wishing that Ten was in his place at some points in this episode...but that's actually a good thing, since it's the first episode I've thought would be good enough for him to improve it, if that makes sense.
*Matt Smith still doesn't ring my bells, but the rear view on him is most impressive. (Enough to make one wonder if a truly stellar ass is a basic requirement for casting the Doctor in New Who. I'm not complaining, mind you, but it does make me wonder about the casting process juuuuust a bit.)
*While I do enjoy the fact that Amy is clearly nuts, I'm liking her less and less every episode. She seems to have Martha's delusional pining after someone who doesn't seem interested in her combined with Rose's ability to treat her original SO like utter shit, all with a delightful topping of self-absorption. I'm kind of hoping that I read some great Amy fic soon, or I'm going to break my wrist trying to reach through the screen and pimpslap her. (Authors on my flist who are planning to write something with Amy, please help me like her. I really want to.)
*RORY! He had a whiff of S1 Mickey at first, which scared me, but I really like him! He has my permission to stay around as long as possible. (But preferably without the hair shown in the previews for next week. UGH. Who the hell is doing hair for this series? Given River's cranial poodle and Rory's quasi-mullet of death, there's clear evidence that whatever drugs they're on are clearly doing them no good at all.)
*As many issues as I have with members of the current Team TARDIS, I couldn't help grinning at the "her boys" line. When Eleven was telling Rory to listen, I was wondering if they were also hearing the birth of a new OT3, or if that was just me. (Again, authors, consider it a challenge...I'm not sure that you can make me dig this threesome more than 9/Rose/Jack or 10/10.5/Rose, but you are more than welcome to try!)
