I noticed that if you're on your mobile, the captcha is the old write in the word, but if you're on your laptop/computer the captcha is the picture thing.

Weird. On my mobile, it's showing up as some thing where I have to move a button to move the puzzle pieces. I wish I had the word version back!

it is always more activity at the beginning of a post.

i don't think so... i think it's just that new posts happen when there's enough activity to finish the previous one. this past week, we posted more comments in the old post than in some months in the past year. so it doesn't really matter whether the post has 0 comments or 4500, if the people are there, the post will be active.
