A rare political rant from me

Oct 07, 2008 05:48

I posted this as a comment in a friend's journal, with apologies to her because I've heard what she said before but for some reason it really set me off this morning - it's totally not her. :) just finally pushed over the edge ( Read more... )

There are a lot of Republicans that are right, given. There still exist traditional fiscal conservatives whose ideas have proven correct and functional and whose isolationist foreign policy has lead to a worldwide respect of the United States.

However, when you hesitate on meeting with the leaders of a NATO ally and long time military assistant in the current war because you think they "want to harm the United States", you're not really standing on the winning side of the correct line. When you think Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez is in the Middle East, you're factually incorrect. When you say you would fire Chairman Chris Cox of the Securities and Commission for his abuses to the nation's fiscal stability when, in fact, you would lack the authority to do so, you're wrong ( ... )

I'll email you... Soonish. :). School and work are pretty busy right now so it makes me a little crazy.

Funny thing also about my rant? I'm a republican- and undecided.

Well, there is a "right" (as in correct) choice, the problem is we may not know what it is at this point.

People see various parts of the "puzzle", as it were, and believe that their choice is right because their beliefs fit various pieces of the puzzle. Realistically, though, the puzzle is so complex that it's nearly impossible to really figure out who fits best.

I identify as "democrat." However, there are things that I don't like about Obama/Biden, and that I do like about McCain/Palin. There just happen to be more of the reverse. Like you said, though, that's a choice. Democracy is nice because everyone gets to make that choice for themselves.

So, believe in your choice. Even if I disagree, I (and hopefully everyone else) respect your right to make that choice.

Although I might have more to say about that later, if you talk more about it. ;-)

haha. Not likely. I tend not to post politics because I dislike my friends screaming at me that I'm wrong.

I just get so pissed when everyone is like "make the right choice!" just because you choose someone doesn't make your choice automatically the right one.

I tend to batten down the hatches during super political times because of the level of hatred that is spewed towards both parties (but it sure seems to focus on republicans!)

...I'm sick of being a Republican and having people treat me like I'm the freaking devil because of it.

Haven't you heard? Conservative is the like the new "gay". You best better stay in your little red closet and keep to yourself, lest you get persecuted on the Internets (and IRL) by the Libs (especially in California!)

Ain't it funny how Conservatives, often labelled for being intolerant Bible-thumpers are the ones facing massive intolerance/hate from the other side? Hell, it's encouraged to poke fun @ Republicans and satirize them, but crack on the Libs? Total faux paus. On a related note, wanna' go see "An American Carol"? =)

Libs hate stuff. Conservatives don't care about stuff. And somewhere, centrists are like the parsley on the side of the dinner plate. Pretty to look at and wonder about once in a while, but ultimately irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Kinda' sucks that's how it is, but hey...

The vast, sweeping majority of partisan humor isn't funny, regardless of political party. The reason people think their material is worth spreading around is the same one that seems to fuel the massive conservative persecution complex we've seen arise over the past 8 years, despite Republican control of all three branches of state.

We're in the middle of a massive shift in party definition. Republicans no longer stand for fiscal conservation, having long since turned to explosive military spending and Democrats no longer stand for global communion, having taken on a fear-based isolationist policy.

This generation is being forced to redefine its labels mid-stride, something the United States hasn't had to do in almost a century. It makes people uncomfortable and it usually drives them to cling to their parties that much harder, despite the fact that they no longer accurately represent the beliefs of their constituency.
