As someone who comes from an uncommon country (I'm pretty sure I'm the only player from that country in my game) I'd appreciate this being a full time community.

I don't know 100% how IP addresses work but a lot of the people I see saying they can't trace you say "the worst they can do is find out what city you're in". Well, that's great if you live in New York or Los Angeles, not so great if you live in Moscow (for the record, Moscow is not where I'm from).

To be honest, there is no guarantee an IP will track back to the correct city or country depending on how the IP address is registered. Typically though, the most it will give is country.

The best thing anyone can do is to find out what their IP address is and go lookup what others can find via a site like dnsstuff.com. You may have to check a site that will give your actual external IP first if you use a router since the router IP will be of no help to you.

A site that will give some basics for you is http://www.lawrencegoetz.com/programs/ipinfo/

That will give your external IP and basic info about what can be found from it. Seeing what can actually be found for yourself is the best way to understand how concerned you need to be about IP logging.

But to be honest, even with the fact that I live in a smallish city in the US, IP logging doesn't bother me much. I think it is all scare mongering because no actual proof is being given.

Learn how IP addresses work, use proxy, post at uncommon hours. I live in an uncommon country too.

Or more importantly: Don't make any comments you don't have the guts to own up to.

That's a lot of fucking work when the alternative is just don't turn IP logging on.

Nefarious purposes. Now I'm going to imagine Snidley Whiplash as the one with all of those IP addresses.
