this is going to sound pathetic but i don't know how to cook, except on a microwave. i have never cooked on a stove or in an oven and i don't know how. i'm 21 years old and i live my parents, and i'm not allowed to use either because they think i'll mess it up when they've never even let me try or made the effort to teach me how. until recently i didn't know how to use the washer and dryer either until i figured it out for myself.

i work full-time and i want to move out soon but i know i need to get my shit together and learn some basic life skills. so how do i learn to cook? aside from parents, how did you all learn to cook? do you know any good cookbooks for beginners?

i'm in a similar situation nonnie just look on websites rather than pay for cookbooks and search easy recipes (idk if it will work outside the uk but BBC has some good recipes for beginners as well as more advanced recipes)

soups are good to play around with

and stews are pretty simple and easy and can last for days

just play around & maybe avoid meals where you're cooking for people so there's no pressure on you in case it goes wrong until you're comfortable in your cooking skills

& also i'm probs saying something you already know sorry if i am but ovens always vary in times so like. if you're following a recipe that tells you to cook for 50 minutes in the oven bear in mind it might take longer or be quicker (mine will burn any food after three quarters of the recommended time so i have to pull food out early)

also. i've never been but cooking classes could be an option?

I learned to cook just by trial and error. I find the best way is to get a recipe online that has step-by-step pictures like budgetbytes.com (they also have really cheap recipes)
Use youtube tutorials too

Start easy. Make some spaghetti. That's literally just boiling water. Then graduate to making scrambled eggs. Also super easy. Then go on to make more complicated things.

i pretty much taught myself through trial & error! you're gonna mess up sometimes, i still do and i've been on my own for 4 years now. don't be hard on yourself if you do.

online recipes are my favourite thing. i rarely use actual cookbooks.
