It was a nice and rather warm day for winter. The holidays were just around the corner, but the feeling of Christmas was barely there without the snow. Not even the decorations were helping much. It felt like autumn with Christmas decorations, although a bit colder.

Jongwoon and Ryeowook were laying on their sofa in the living room, not watching TV, just staring blankly at the ceiling like waiting for something to happen and make them move.

At times Jongwoon would slip a hand over Ryeowook’s waist or cuddle in his hair. Ryeowook would take Jongwoon’s hand in his and play with it, sighing.

“Hey, Ryeowook…” Jongwoon broke the silence.

“Mm?”

“What would you like for Christmas?”

“I don’t know. Christmas is not that fun anymore like it was when we were kids.”

“Yeah…those were good times. Your mother wrapping you up so you couldn’t breathe or move and rolling like a ball in the snow. Good memories.” Jongwoon laughed.

“Haha, very funny Jongwoon. You weren’t too good with your feet either and you got sick almost all the time that I had to take care of you.”

Jongwoon pouted but then turned into a grin.

“Doesn’t matter, you’re still my cute snowball and I liked that you were by my side. I would’ve been jealous if you’d play with the others while I was sick.”

“Really? I should’ve done that.” Ryeowook laughed and Jongwoon was pinching him as revenge for the words.

They laughed and teased each other for the next hour as they were reminiscing their Christmas holidays spent together up until now.

They weren’t too romantic or have special memories, but they cherished every one of them. Especially the winter holidays.

It was probably the most monotone days of their lives, but spending them together in a cozy house under the blankets next to the chimney with a cup of hot chocolate and cheesy songs heard on the radio, made them happy enough.

Unfortunately this year seems like it is going to be twice as boring since there was no trace of snow in sight. But they didn’t want that to stop them having a good time or at least try to make it special.

“So what would you want?”

Ryeowook smiled at Jongwoon as he stroke the older man’s hair, shaking his head.

“I don’t want anything, Jongwoon. I just wish it would snow and be like the old days.”

“I wish that too, but I still want to give you something.”

“You’re hopeless, Jongwoon. Okay then, what would you want for Christmas?”

Jongwoon smiled and leaned to steal a kiss from Ryeowook, lingering more than he had planned, eventually parting their lips. Ryeowook’s lips always does that to him.

“Even this will be enough.” The older said in his husky voice, making Ryeowook blush at the words.

They spent the last week cleaning up the house, cooking and going to work.

Jongwoon still had no idea what to give Ryeowook. It was Christmas Eve and nothing came to his mind. Nothing. He’d want to crawl in a basement and never come out.

Just when he was about to leave the house, as Ryeowook bid him goodbye for the day, a terrible shiver ran down his spine and when he lifted his head he saw a white coat covering the ground and every house in his sight. It finally snowed!

Ryeowook was in awe. He felt like he hasn’t seen snow in years.

“Jongwoon, it snowed!” Ryeowook pointed out.

“I can see that too.” Jongwoon laughed.

“This means it will be a great Christmas, right?” the younger man’s eyes shined with hope.

“Yeah.” Jongwoon tried to smile warmly, but the thought of not having a present for Ryeowook didn’t let him be too happy about it.

“Come home early, okay?” Ryeowook said as he kissed the older man’s cheek.

“I’ll try.”

For once Jongwoon was somewhat happy he had to work on Christmas Eve, as it let him think more about what to do. He wanted to give Ryeowook something special, not the kind of gifts everyone gives on Christmas.

Unfortunately he couldn’t think of much the whole day because of work. He almost had a car accident on the way home so he stopped somewhere safe and let his frustration surface.

He felt rather ashamed for going home empty handed. He sat in the driver’s seat with his hands over the wheel while his head rested above them. He sat there for a brief moment.

And then it hit him. Something he almost forgot about. He grinned to himself and started the engine to finally go home.

Ryeowook was waiting with food on the table for Jongwoon. He felt rather silly with the table decorations and thought he might have over did it. But he couldn’t help it.

Jongwoon entered the house all smiles and went to kiss Ryeowook’s forehead. The Christmas ghosts suddenly came to Ryeowook’s mind for some reason since he knew Jongwoon wasn’t in high spirits in the past week.

He was rather suspicious of Jongwoon’s happiness at the table, talking things he can’t even understand.

“Jongwoon, slow down! No one’s going to eat your food and please don’t talk with your mouth full.” Ryeowook scolded the older man.

Although Jongwoon obliged he was still grinning like a fool, Ryeowook thought.

When they finished dinner Jongwoon told the younger man that he has a surprise for him and to go and change in thicker clothes like his mother used to do. Ryeowook crooked his nose at the words but he obliged as much as he could, he still wanted to walk properly.

They took the car, Jongwoon leading him to a place he’s never been before, miles away from their home.

“Jongwoon, where are we going?” the younger man asked as he admired the view from his window.

The Earth looked so beautiful all covered in white, Ryeowook thought. Despite the cold weather and having to dress up in thick clothes until he could barely walk or breathe properly it was actually his favorite season.

Jongwoon only said that it’s a surprise and to wait a little longer. Ryeowook pouted.

Christmas songs could be heard from the radio, the two trying to sing along and teasing each other’s broken English.

Time flew by and Jongwoon finally stopped the car, to Ryeowook’s gratitude. They got out of the car, Jongwoon guiding the younger man, holding his hand, to an old abandoned small ice-skating arena in the middle of nowhere.

“Oh, it’s still here!” Jongwoon exclaimed.

“How do you know about this place, Jongwoon?” Ryeowook asked.

“I once took this side of the road with my father, as a midnight trip to get me to sleep, and we saw this! At that time people still came and it was well taken care of, but it seems that no one is coming here anymore. I wanted to give you something special for Christmas and since I couldn’t think of another present I remembered about this place and how I promised myself I’d take you here one day. Good thing it’s still here and not too damaged.”

“But you know I can’t skate.”

“Neither can I, but we can hold each other’s hands and if one falls the other can help. Deal?”

Ryeowook looked at Jongwoon with tears in his eyes, he was so happy Jongwoon did this for him he threw his arms around the older’s neck and kissed him fully.

“I love you.” He confessed for the nth time since they’ve been together.

Jongwoon was rather caught off-guard and flustered. He never thought it would actually make Ryeowook happy.

“I love you too.” He replied for the nth time.

As they expected, ice-skating wasn’t their best sport. They fell almost all the time and trying to cling to each other, but instead of crying like they would’ve done as kids they laughed of their own clumsiness.

Ryeowook would mention every now and then that they would be dead sick tomorrow.

They finally decided to go home after they were soaked from head to toe and shivering from the cold. It was already passed midnight, considering that it was finally Christmas day.

They went back to the car and Jongwoon started the engine so they could warm up quicker.

“Oh, almost forgot about something!” Ryeowook searched through his things, Jongwoon looking at him confused and saw the younger man giving him a small nicely wrapped up present.

Jongwoon opened the small present and found a pair of skull-shaped silver earrings.

“Ryeowook…h-how did you…” he tried to find the words to speak.

“I know you’ve always wanted them from the way you stared at them from outside the shop every time we walked by.” Ryeowook grinned and leaned to kiss Jongwoon’s lips.

“So you won’t say I didn’t gave you what you said was enough.”

Jongwoon was speechless. It was one of the mere reasons why he always loved Ryeowook and decided to make the younger man go out with him and eventually living together. He felt the happiest man alive.

The only response he could give at the moment was kissing him back passionately.

Merry Christmas, snowball.

Merry Christmas, Jongwoon.

Just as Ryeowook said, the next day they were sick, none of them wanting to get out of bed. But Ryeowook still had to get down and make a soup for them and get some medication.

Indeed, they were physically sick but happy inside from each of their surprises and how could they possibly live without another when they complete each other so much.

And for the nth time they sat next to each other, drinking hot chocolate as Christmas songs jammed on the radio, everything feeling like the old days but with a more mature and lazy side to it, snuggling under the blankets as much as their sickness allowed them to.

Certainly winter is both their favorite season of the year.
