This meme has been pretty much everywhere, and considering there are only a few more hours left in 2010 in my area I figured I better get right on it. (Procrastinate? Me?)
1. Your main fandom of the year: Here comes a shocker: Doctor Who! ...What do you mean, you're not surprised?
2. Your favorite film this year: Inception. I love the concept, the imagery, the ambiguity of the ending, and the soundtrack is EPIC. (I'm not part of that fandom though, mostly because it's full of romance and slash that I personally didn't see while watching the film.)
3. Your favorite book this year: Oh, don't make me choose a book. I can't choose just one! But this year I discovered the Dresden Files, a series of books about snarky wizard/detective Harry Dresden, and went through them all in about a month. Often in the wrong order too, but it didn't matter because they were awesome. I can't believe I never read these before! (In all honesty, I enjoyed reading about Dresden a lot more than I did reading about that other wizard named Harry. Just saying.) And now, after going through all those books, I'm finally stuck with a heck of a cliffhanger and having to wait months before I can find out what happens now that the main character has been killed off (sort of). Can't wait for Ghost Story to come out.
4. Your favorite album or song this year: Oh man. I don't have a favorite song of the year. I have a new favorite song every week, sometimes every few days. I'm fickle like that. And I don't really buy full albums anymore since iTunes lets me buy just the songs I like the most... but I guess the musical artist who has had the most presence in my life this year is Taylor Swift. My youngest sister loves her, so I get all Taylor's music from her... but then our other sister hates her, and so whenever we play her music it turns into this big outcry with one sister saying she's trashy, the other fiercely defending her and me trying (and often failing) to stay out of it. Hhhmm. Not sure this makes her my favorite but it's an interesting story I guess.
5. Your favorite TV show this year: Obviously Doctor Who, but since I talk about that all the time, let me also say that I've been loving Castle this year. I only recently got into it but it's sweet and funny and something for my family to watch together now that LOST is gone for good. We recently got into an interesting discussion when my mom complained about why the producers can't just let Castle and Beckett get together, and my dad said that would take the drama out of it. Then mom protested that a story shouldn't end just because a couple is in a steady relationship, and I pointed out that while that may be true in real life it does not often happen on TV. Most shows try to stay in the realm of UST for as long as possible.
6. Your favorite LJ community this year: LOL I am only a part of a few comms but I have to say I enjoyed discussing DW with the folks at
starwhales , and of course
doctor_rose_fix has a new piece of shippy goodness every day. I don't comment very often but I love lurking in these comms.
7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year: Well, since I already talked about the Dresden Files lets go for a TV show I got into like a decade late: Stargate SG-1! I started taking out the seasons from my library, and then all the episodes were uploaded to Netflix so I began watching them there. I know I am incredibly late to this party and there are tons of spinoff shows and movies already but whatever, I do what I want. I had to jump around a lot in seasons at first, depending on what was available at the library, so I watched a lot of episodes out of order, but they do a good job of filling you in if you haven't seen everything so I wasn't bothered much by it. I love that this show constantly refers to past episodes and occurrences instead of never mentioning them again. And I really like the dynamic between the original team: Jack, Sam, Daniel, and Teal'c. They are all awesome together and it's not the same when someone else has to fill in. I am on the seventh or eighth season now I think, though I'm skipping around a lot so it's hard to tell.
8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year: I'm not sure I've really been disappointed this year; I guess I would have liked to get some more answers out of LOST before it ended but I think it went out in a good way all the same.
9. Your TV boyfriend of the year: The Tenth Doctor. I don't care that it was his last episodes or that he was barely on TV this year, he was and forever will be my Doctor, and I will always love him for that.
10. Your TV girlfriend of the year: Can it be an actress and not a fictional character? Because I want to say Karen Gillan- not Amy Pond, because as interesting as she is I'm not quite sure how I feel about her still. But Karen herself is love. She is adorable and funny and it seems like she would be an awesome person to hang out with. Plus, we could celebrate our birthdays together!
11. Your biggest squee moment of the year: I squeed bigtime during the Whirlwind Companion Tour at the end of End of Time, especially at Martha/Mickey and Rose. I squeed at Martha because that was one scene I hadn't been spoiled for and somehow wasn't suspecting, but it was sweet and I really do think she and Mickey fit well together. And Rose is, well, Rose. My favorite companion, seeing the Doctor for both the first and last time... how much do I love them? SO. MUCH. I also squeed during the Pandorica Opens when Rory showed up again in his centurion outfit because Rory is awesome like that and I was so glad he came back.
12. Your most missed old fandom: Well, the only fandom I was ever heavily involved with before was Animorphs, and I haven't been particularly nostalgic for them this year, although I still have the Andalite statue I made sitting on my desk and most of the books in my closet. But the show I missed the most this year was Quantum Leap... I haven't had the time to watch any episodes recently but I've just been missing it lately and hearing the ever-changing rumors about a movie has sparked my interest. Although if it ever does happen and they cast someone other than Scott Backula and Dean Stockwell as Sam and Al, I will be very disappointed. It should happen with them or not at all, in my opinion.
13. Your fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to? Um. Not sure, honestly. I wanted to watch V when it first came out but ran out of time after a few episodes and have heard since then that the show wasn't very good, so not sure about that.
14. Your biggest anticipation of the New Year: New season of Doctor Who! Looking forward to it very much, and I can't wait to see Amy, Rory and the Doctor all traveling together on the TARDIS. Should be interesting. (I'm not looking forward to the big midseason cliffhanger though. I have a feeling it will drive me nuts.)
Happy New Year everyone!
