My cousin Tim is getting shipped to Iraq.  Baghdad.  In the army for combat technology.

I don't even know how I'm supposed to feel.  On one hand, he's family, so I should be compassionate and hope for a safe return.  And of course I do.

Answer to #2 - Every 'improvement' becomes imperative. The time frame for improving is very small, and the consequences made clear. Acting comes immediately to mind.

Yesterday at work I spoke with a girl who wants to join the Navy. When I asked her why she would want to go to war her response was - "Well, if the US is at war then I want to support it. You can't just decide not to go, you can't treat your country like that."

Well of course not. That would be, like, a 'choice' or something.

Those recruiters are pushy. I had to deal with one who kept calling me when I was in high school. Those statistics are scary, but all too authentic.

The military is nothing more than a means for poor kids to die and suffer for rich men's wars.
