stepped in a wet spot

I've never smelled anything in my life and for the most part it has been a nonissue for me. I've always had people around to help me out in situations where smell was helpful/needed and have had no problems to speak of. Recently I bought my daughter a kitten. It's my first pet really (unless you count the hamster) and I've found myself in a ( Read more... )

hahahah.
just this past weekend, i was cleaning up my laundry room (where my cat box is) and i picked up one of the mats and it was damp. i had to take it to my husband to smell it to determine if it was cat pee or if it was a leak or overflow from the washing machine.
luckily, he thought it was just water.
man it's annoying sometimes to not be able to smell!!

Totally. It's always been a non-issue for me too, but... yeah. There's definitely moments where you need a non-anosmic to help you out! :)

That smell detector thingy would be sweet!
I seem to remember reading (why, I don't know...) that pee is comprised primarily of ammonia. So perhaps a product could be developed to help us out. Simple paper strips one might apply to the area which change colour to indicate whether or not the surface has been leaked on. I don't know... just an idea.

A gadget that's as good as the human nose is probably a looong way off (dang!). But something basic that could take in, then process and identify the chemical compounds of certain fundamental everyday smells would be so useful.

wow.. the paper strip idea is very cool actually... or maybe a powder that changes color.. or dude! something where you could put it on a earswab and then pour a liquid over it and it would turn color if its pee or or not like they do on csi to find blood (yah.. i watch too much tv).

heh.. too bad people still don't take the lack of smell seriously enough to develop stuff like this. but then, i rarely take it seriously myself. its hard to have reverence for something you have no concept of.

A good way to find cat pee is to use a blacklight. Aparently this works, and when the black light is shined on the spot it will illuminate the culprite if its is truly pee. I think this works on dog pee as well.

However I think the strip of paper idea is alot more convienent and simpler then a black light.

I think we all wish we had that Richie Rich nose at some point or another.
