My brother, 20, has anosmia and has since I can remember. He remembers not smelling around age 4 but without any memories before that, we are lead to believe it is congenital. He has had his adenoids removed but this was after we first knew about his problem. He spent a week at the Taste and Smell Clinic in Washington DC and all they could tell him

i'm sorry about your brothers, but yes, congenital anosmia is generally hereditary. there is a group you can tell your brother about at http://www.anosmia.net it's a forum for congenital anosmics (all the other anosmia forums are geared towards sudden-onsets)

That sounds familiar with you youngest brother. When I was young I thought smell was something I should have but just hadn't 'figured out' yet, so I tended to agree with people about smells, mimicking their reactions, as you say.
