Waste Management

Dec 22, 2009 10:22

In this entry I’m going to talk about the Waste Management album by Tatu. At first, when I heard the title, I had no idea why they chose it (even though they had mentioned where they had it from) but I thought it sounded interesting.
The separate tracks are great, but it’s only when you listen to the transcendental version when you really start to get it.
You could see it as a video game with levels.
The entire Tatu-sound feel has also gotten an alien attack flavor.
It’s anyway about a relationship which at certain points gets romantic. Maybe between two girls, two people, two alien or a combination of those.
Anyway, it’s great how most songs can be interpreted in at least three ways: a romantic way, a political way and an alien invasion way.
But I'd still like to know what they had in mind while creating this.

Still, I’ll start with the cover. Which I’m finally starting to get.
At first, I thought it’s about pretty wives whose beauty fades away with time and their partners wish they could replace them with sexy girls. They don’t care about the faces since they wouldn’t be able to look them in the eye. The withered women thus become waste and their men think they should manage them.

Another interpretation could be that some people just want the pleasure and they make love with whoever is able to offer this to them. Again, not caring about faces and clothing. Just focusing on the pleasure.

Those two interpretations would indeed go well with the beginning of the video of the first song (White Robe) with Lena dressed provocative.
But, after hearing the album, I’m thinking about another meaning: In with the new, out with the old.
The girls have probably hidden somewhere in whatever clothes they were wearing, which have gotten dirty while running away from both human and alien life forms. But they have eventually been caught by something: the shadows on the wall behind them reminds me of their first album with mugshots and it looks to me like whatever found them had a bright beam, to cast the shadows.
So they are getting assimilated. Starting with the head. It looks like they’re stripped of their skin and even mind. To us mortals, they seem to disappear, but in fact they are evolving to a higher state, that we wouldn’t understand. However, everything that was before is no longer there and no longer matters.

I've just read a moment ago on the official blog that the transcendental version was made to meditate on it. With all the love and respect, but I can't meditate on something so deep, disturbing and loud. I need slow and mild music for that, preferably with no words, drums or riffs in it.
Meditation is something you acheive by getting into a state of mind similar to sleeping (yes, I've read the wikipedia and so should you). Could you sleep (or even relax) while listening to this album? I don't think so. I find it very tense.
It's a nice idea to try and create something like that, and the result is beautiful, but it's not meditation music. (Believe me, I've been with a yoga guy once) Just stick to the idea of conceptual album.

White Robe

Feeling ugly, looking pretty…
This verse was on many of my friends’ IM statuses. Because we are all pretty and we know it, but sometimes there are prettier girls who steal our perfect boys and thus making us feel ugly. Hey, I have a logical mind.
The image in my head is of Lena dressed sexy but otherwise trashy and dirty. And I’m not talking about the kinky meaning of those words.

Sun is painted in a corner
Hearing this, I see that quarter-of-a-sun that I used to draw in the corner of the page whenever I made a drawing. I always made the sun chubby and smiley. So it makes me think about Happy Smiles as well.

All the lies they keep on selling, but you never check the spelling
This is clearly a reference to the Animal Farm, where the leading pig starts to tweak the laws to benefit him.

Overall, the song gives me an underground vibe. It’s when you find yourself locked somewhere in some sort of a cell, like in Orwell’s 1984. You don’t really know why you’re there, you don’t know what’s happening in the other rooms, who else is there, what time it is (20:20) or what they are going to do to you. But it’s definitely something dangerous and hurtful.

Former body, future spirit; paragliding back to Heaven
This line contains the idea of transcending, which will become more obvious during the next tracks on the album.

The lyrics, as for all of the other songs, seem to me very well written. Both rhyming well and making a lot of sense. I bow to the lyricists.

You and I

Now it seems that in the cell (you are crying in a corner) you have found someone who means very much to you. It could be your lover, your best friend, your secret crush or all in one. You still don’t know what will happen to you, but you are willing to help each other, even if it kills you. (for the rest of our lives)

We believe in what we’ll be; for a life we didn’t ask for
These lyrics are showing that they have an idea about what is going to happen. It is possible that they are the chosen ones for this.

No truths to confirm, no lies to deny, to hopeless to care…
Now those words tell me something about a hopeless love. Maybe for someone of the same gender (such as a secret crush on your best friend), when you can’t tell the others if you are straight or not, because you’re not even sure yourself. And even if you were sure, it would still be none of their business.

This song (mostly its lyrics) still gives me that rejected-lesbian-lovers image that they’ve had in the beginning. Which, to me, is fine. And yes, spicy.

I remember standing up all night with a friend of mine on Love Radio just to hear the premiere of You and I. And I still associate this song with him. Yes, it’s a he.

I love this interlude for its beat. I wish it was a full song.

Sparks

Running down my electric wire
Now that you’ve gotten an ally, you find out what they are doing to prisoners like you. Torture. You have no clue why, yet you are put on high voltage (sparks are flying in my head) and so is your partener (sparks are flying in her head). The two of you escape by playing dead. Or was that the electricity? You do get away, anyway.

Love Yulia’s voice on the English version. It’s a bit more melodical than on the original. She plays a bit with the notes and it sounds great.
Although on the Russian version I really like the verse where the bunnies on the wall disappear after the sun sets (Zaichiki na stene posle zakata umiraiut). It could be taken as a reference to the end of the world, where nothing will matter any longer, or as a political reference to the candidates for presidency (what fool will win), who appear bright and shiny before the elections and then their lies fade away.

The interlude makes me feel like you’ve somehow gone up to the surface.

Snowfalls

You’ve managed to escape and are now finding yourselves on the street. Being the two smart people that you are, you also get some motors, in order to lose your track faster. You also feel improved (be lighter). The electric torturing might have caused some mutations, such as the awakening of unused brain parts (you feel dumb though and don’t wanna die like that). The stars (ufo’s or missiles) are already falling from the sky and it’s night.

The ending of the video matches the interlude, in my opinion. The two people are caught by whoever was torturing them and they eventually crash into each other. I don’t see it as a suicide anymore, now that I hear the continuation. I think they know better than that. And while it’s still possible that their bodies have been carbonized, their souls, or some physical parts of them, have ascended. (driving into the light, down and then up we go)

The interlude makes me see that light that brings Mr. Bean on Earth. I can also see the clouds rushing by. And that’s the moment when “transcendental” started to sound less weird in my head for a song.

Martian Eyes

You arrive on a ship and meet the first aliens. The moon is mentioned.

I’ve been having this song as my ringtone for a year and whenever it starts, I feel like checking my cell phone :) I’ve heard that Sergey Galoyan had written many songs for them and they only picked this one. It’s a pity, because he’s a great writer, but I also understand that this is a conceptual album, that tells a story and all of the songs on it were very well chosen and arranged.

It’s one of the most wonderful songs I’ve ever heard and I’m glad it was kept in Russian, even though I don’t understand much of it. It’s the only Russian song on this album, apart from the bonus remix tracks.

This interlude is getting scary. All those alien-sounds, the breathing, the machines and the doors slamming are portraying the scene from Alien, when Sigourney Weaver finds her weird clones.

Little People

Going from door to door, you eventually find little pieces on the table. Taking a closer look, they are humanoid bits.

Little people reassemble
I’m not sure I fully understand if the little people reassembling themselves are parts of humans, or clones, or aliens or robots or what. However, I don’t think they are made by someone or something, but by themselves. They seem to be able to regenerate and reassemble at a high rate, which hints at a collective conscience, but it also makes them even scarier. I know I wouldn’t want to see them.

Little people break like China
When I first heard this verse, I was like OMG dis iz political shizt, but then I remembered that some porcelain is called china. Silly me. So they break to pieces. And then reassemble. It is also mentioned that they are trained to kill and to lie. And that one will break the spell. Probably some curse that the world has been under.

Ugly, pretty, major, minor
It makes me believe that human(oid) body parts are assimilated to create new lifeforms. It also suggests that the differences and the particularities of the people don't matter anymore.

Although I really like the song, I preferred the demo version of the chorus. The one with many voices that make me dizzy. The title and the alien-ish feel to it reminds me of some alien race, that is said to be the little grays. But I don’t know any more stuff about it.

The interlude has a slight pause in it. It would have come in handy if the album was on tape, so that the first part was on side A and the second part on side B. But otherwise I’m not sure that skip is very welcome in the flow of the story. Maybe their hearts are skipping a beat when they see what is happening next…

Waste Management

This is when the actual mananging of the waste begins. I see it as an invasion that comes from the sky. Most of the songs give me a night vibe. So this invasion is happening sometime during the night. A really long one, that’s for sure. Or perhaps the spaceships are so many that they cover up all of the light.
I’m seeing giant transformers-type creatures walking through cities, destroying buldings, causing fires, breaking wires… the usual.
I also feel that they are doing some sort of assimilation. Like the Borg from Star Trek. Resistance is futile.

Then the scenes focus down on people. Our two people. You stood hidden somewhere on the ship until it landed, but you’ve somehow gotten separated and, since you obviously have no cellphones (they wouldn’t be functional anyway), you go looking for each other, avoiding the explosions around you.

Running Blind

The beginning of the song sounds very much like a popular ringtone. I don’t know the name of the tone or the phone brand that has it, but they are very similar. Speaking of which, I think the beat has something in common with the motorik style, which is very good for giving the impression of running.

It’s too dark, I’m so cold…
See? Told you it was at night ^-^ This is when you find yourself in a safe-ish spot, but you soon realize that you need to keep on searching. The rest of the lyrics portray exactly the chase after your precious.

Am I only wasting time? Are you only in my mind?
The song is slowing down and so do you, because your feet hurt and even your mind starts to feel strange.
You first wonder if it’s worth looking for your special someone. Maybe they’re dead, maybe they’ve been brainwashed or maybe they’ve found someone else (alien?)
And then you begin questioning your sanity. You ask yourself if that person ever existed, because what’s happening around you is so sci-fi that you’re hallucinating for sure. But it could also mean that in your head you might have thought that the special someone was more special than they really were.

People running blind
I heard online a nice version of a post-chorus bit. I often find myself singing it over the instrumental part.

This interlude is a great one that I also wished it was an actual song.

Fly On The Wall

I’m not sure this song really fits on this album, but it may be a love confession made on the edge of the world, an invisible alien falling in love with a cute human or it can be about the advantages of being a fly, which I’ve described a bit later in this article.

Ahhh I love this track. I could really talk about it all day long, but maybe I’ll do that when it comes out as a single. Which I still hope it will. Everyone loves it.
Probably because it simply suits so many occasions: when I argued with my ex-boyfriend, when I missed him, when I had a crush on my boss, when I fell in love with a male friend, when I liked a female friend, when I found the perfect man who had no idea I existed, when I was wondering if he was with that blonde on his profile picture… you get the point.

That’s the main thing I love about the Tatu music. I listen to it so much, during many relationships, deceptions, happy times, sad times, parties, depressions, work, play, awaking time, etc, that I can’t associate them with something such as ex-boyfriends. I did so with some songs (other artists, don’t worry) and now I find it hard to listen to them, because they remind me of them. But, like I said, with Tatu is different, luckily.

Wish I was a fly on the wall…
Wanting to be nothing more than a fly on the wall signifies not only the wish of stalking someone without getting yourself a restraining order (you want to see them undressed, duh), but also the wish to return to a simpler life. Being human is complicated. You had a lot of things on your possession and in your head and now you have to give up on them. If you were a dimwit fly with no commitments or relationships, it would be much easier for you to give up on everything… since you had nothing.

Fading away the song gives me the impression that you feel safe, loved and fall asleep. To me, the album could have ended like that, in a human happy ending.
But the interlude interrupts your love with something bright and big… The beam has found you and now you have been assimilated. (be faster than lightening beam)

Time Of The Moon

So now that the waste management is complete and you’ve found each other, the time of the moon has come.
I personally think of the moon as of something very weird. We don’t know much about it. At least not as much as we think we know. Which makes it potentially dangerous.

Still on a personal note, I used to think of this song as a very un-melodic one. Don’t get me wrong, I love rock music with riffs and stuff and it still sounded like Tatu, I just couldn’t get this one. But now I do. So there.

The people feel stronger and smarter (we’re moving faster, intuition) and realize how much they’ve wasted on useless things.

No returning, no regrets and no delay; burning roofs to get away.
They obviously have more abilities than before and they’ve also changed their behaviour. They have evolved to a better race.

We are the flyers, we are the final revelation; the birds in the making We are Borg. And we can fly (even with broken wings, as stated). I rest my case.

In the sky cloud is breaking, voice of the doom
A new beginning is already being here.

Don’t Regret

I’m getting a feeling of morning from the interlude. I can’t tell if it was all a dream and now you get awake physically or just psychically.

But you definitely look at the world before you. Everything has changed. (vsyo…)
You may see many ruins and you may not be human anymore, but you know that, as disappointing as it may look, this is a new beginning. (vsyo…)
So you don’t regret. You found out that you really had nothing to lose, in order to gain a fresh new world.

Other feelings I get from it are that people are hurt and cars are coming for them or that you are walking among the ruins.

It’s a very nice and soothing song. It can heal anything. I often find myself thinking: hey, the world is coming to an end and all I can think about is cute boys? So this is certainly a song for the likes of me.

Time will forget phrases and faces. All that was before is no longer here This maintains the idea of letting go of the past, because it will eventually mean nothing to anyone anyway. And you have nothing to cling on to, either.

No more saying words, no more crying tears
The world has become an easier place to be in, to express yourself in (telepathy maybe) and with 0% chances to be sorry for anything.

No more singing songs, silent lips are dry
The art has disappeared, so have the words. It looks like the mouths aren’t useful anymore. And since they are dry, I’m guessing there are no kisses either.

No more singing songs just for you and I
The true reason why there is no longer art is revealed: there is no you and I anymore. Any trace of romance is long gone.

Silent nights are long, broken hearts are dry
The nights aren’t used for loving, partying or dreaming. They have become empty and boring. Broken hearts have no blood in them. And it doesn’t matter if they are broken anymore.

Gets in the bed, dreams at the station
I’ve written this without having the lyrics in front of me, so I misheard some of them. I don’t get if the station is the place it all began, which would mean a place where everything was more simple; or if the station is the supreme mother ship, where every alien wishes to be.

The feeling of the song is one of nostalgic contentment. You could be sorry about something, but you are trying not to be. It’s about losing something that isn’t coming back and that you can live without anyway so it’s useless to miss it.

The next interlude made me think of a Geiger counter.

I’m thinking of the bonus remix tracks as memories or dreams of the past that they are still having. They are the same, only remembered differently: spacey and blurry… and in Russian :)

I love them anyway, as I do all of the tracks and to be honest, I wasn’t expecting something so profound from the girls and the band. I think many more artists should do such conceptual albums. The only downside to it was that I can’t listen to the songs separately anymore, now that I’ve heard them all and understood the entire story. But, like I said, they also have other interpretations so I’ll just use my imagination.
