came across his comments on Prop 8. I read it and had to smile. I hadn't talked to him about any of the propositions yet.
Look what he said...
Prop. 8- Same-Sex Marriage Amendment: NO
Okay, I could scream about about this one. A yes vote on this prop means there would be a constitutional amendment to make gay marriage illegal. A no vote on this prop

And for the record I voted NO. I'm 100% in favor of gay marriage.
but......
The education code of CA requires that "marriage" be part of any sex education curriculum and the "respect for marriage" part of any teaching.
Therefore if gay marriage is legal, it is simply marriage and required by law to be part of the above.
They are overplaying their hand, but they are technically correct.
There is also a legal opening that could cause a loss of tax exempt status. That part scares me. I don't care who gets married, but the door will be open for someone to sue a church for not performing a ceremony based on gender. Not sure how far they would get since courts have already ruled that churches are not legally bound to perform weddings for non-members etc.
Still voting for it, but as usual things are not as simple as they seem.

I dont see the churches getting far--especially since open and affirming churches would be the ones (and already are) performing the ceremonies. I doubt a gay person would walk into a Friends or Catholic Church and expect to be married in it.

100% dead on, totally an overplay, but not a total lie in this case.
We actually did a freeze frame on the last commercial to visit the state education web site to read the code. The "opt out" program applies only to sex ed programs specifically. I was pretty shocked to read that myself.
On the church angle you're 100% right again...except that you are forgetting the A-Hole factor. Most people just want to marry and be left alone, but the A-Holes out there are always looking for legal holes to slip through. If they can hang a discrimination case on a church or charitable organization and cost them tax-exempt status they will damn sure try.
Leaving that legal door open scares me. It was a flaw in the Prop. I voted no on it anyway and I'm hoping that the courts will side with common sense.
Yeah, maybe I'm REALLY stupid on that one :-)
