stick whacking

Sunday afternoon saw me in Camperdown Park, for the second time, waving a shinai and moving through the footwork of some of the basic attacks and defences drawn from George Silver's "Paradoxes of Defense". The session was instructed by Paul Wagner whom, I understand, has done some considerable work (and been published) translating and interpreting ( Read more... )

Thank you for the offer, but a bunch of things have come up this week (Sarah is moving, so that alone is generating some 'must do now' stuff). Would next week be ok?

Speaking of dinner, we are going to try to organise a night at the Korean BBQ place down on King Street sometime soon. I suspect that might be right up your alley :) Shall I keep you informed?

Please do. If you are talking of the one down towards Alice, I have eaten there and the food is excellent.

Holy Smokes, that sounds Awesome! gwyryon May 24 2004, 19:46:12 UTC
Especially this:

His emphasis on timing and distance holds true for any martial art, armed or unarmed. It is a fighting style, a soldier's art, not a sport. Attacks are designed to incapacitate or kill, not score or wound but that is secondary to defense. Footwork flows from what your body wants to do. The system itself seems quite simple, sophistication growing from subtlety and judgement.

Silver's stuff is _nice_. Efficient and effective - two traits which I find aesthetically pleasing. It seems immediately accessible as well. I have seen some arts taught where what you first learn is almost useless until some time later where it starts to combine with other basics into functional defences or attacks. The basics are all useful.

I've been keen to get some Stoccata training for a while now, but I was under the impression that beginners training was only offered on monday nights, and I can't make it at that time. Can you tell me a bit more about Paul's sunday classes?

I am not sure what has been before, but apparently there was enough interest from people in the Inner West end of the world to make doing something here useful.

Sunday afternoons, 4:00 pm in Camperdown park (corner farthest from King St, and on Church St) 'til about 5:30. I understand Paul is looking at different Halls in the area at the moment.

There are a couple of pretty rank beginners (myself and Herbie), a couple of people who have some (a year or so?) training and a couple of others I couldn't place. Paul is showing us Silver's backsword.

Anythgin else? I can send you Paul's e-mail if you like.

no, that sounds really exciting. Paul's email address is available on the school website. I'll contact him if I can make the time.
