HOW do you gauge loneliness?

Hmm....

some people gauge it by the scars on their arms...
some people gauge it by the volume of liquid consumed...
some people gauge it by the number of times they've already read that book they're holding...
some people gauge it by the number of people sitting with someone else in the restaurant...

I can only gauge it myself when I wake up and it feels like winter... not sure how that sounds... but sometimes you open your eyes, and you just get the lingering feeling that everything outside of your room has grown colder and darker...

exactly what I was speaking of.... those are all ways people try to work out what's in their heads... not everyone is equipped to deal with loneliness or the dreaded sense of ennui or any of those other "French diseases of the soul" in the same way...
