I was half-hoping to hit 20k today and I'm realizing how much easier the first 50k are than the last 50k. When it's a perfectly new project, there's this open meadow and you can run around anywhere, with your eyes closed even. The second half of the story has trees all over the place that you have to maneuver around.

"At the beginning, a book can be anything when it grows up. Then it makes certain critical choices, dates certain people instead of others, starts a family, gets certain jobs, commits fauxes pas and shameful gaffes, and reaches middle age with more personality, more scars, and fewer doors open to it than when it was shiny and unformed. Now it's wiser, and has the direction it lacked when younger, but it misses the time when it could be anything, anything it wanted, if it just worked hard enough."
