Wow! This is all great advice.

What I would tell aspiring artists. A couple of things.

One is Greg van Eekhout's: "Never Surrender."

The other is that the wheel turns. You may be up one year, but careers have downs, too, If you're ready for the down, you can work hard through it and be ready to catch the wheel when it's your time to be up again.

I'm laughing about "cash flow," o you who forgot to bill me for the latest card order!!

I think both those points are super important, and even weave together. And if you've got a good practice going with your work, and you've been cultivating those strong friendships, you're ready for anything.

Heh, yes...looking at the chart I thought, I really have to get better organized about billables! :-)

I'm neither an artist nor a writer, but I would tell any young person, "Don't take yourself so seriously."

Of course, when people told me that when I was young, I was offended to the point of outrage.

I forgot to mention anything about humor. We did take ourselves so seriously, didn't we? And then fell splat a bunch of times. Oh, I remember being so offended by those words, usually just before I tripped over something. Especially, I would say, we have to learn to laugh at ourselves to see ourselves...
