Mirrormask

Has anyone seen Mirrormask? I just got done watching it, and what a strange film! It's a little slow to start, but it's a visual feast! Written by Neil Gaiman of Sandman fame, and directed by Dave McKean, who did the cover art for Sandman and a ton of other Gaiman projects, the film shows the unique style of both of its creators. It's a coming of ( Read more... )

Hey, I never got to see that! I went to the theatre over here, but it was already gone. I'll have to check out the Amazon link, then!

Is it as good as the Gaiman series that you showed me, the one with Door?

Honest opinion? No, just cuz Neverwhere was more adult and darker, which is more to my tastes. Mirrormask *is* a childrens film, exactly as Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal were, as opposed to, say, City of Lost Children, which was about children but not *for* children. I've found that who likes these films is intensely personal. :) If you never got a whiff of Tink's magic dust you may not care for it; if you got a sparkle or two while some other, luckier, kid was getting dusted you might think it's okay, and if you spent three minutes trying to rub the stuff out of your eyes then realised you were bumping against the ceiling, you'll love it. :) (I'm somewhere between the last two.) I will say that Helena reminded me a *lot* of Door. The actors and even characters were very similar...enough to make you wonder if Door were called Helena in London Above. :p

Sounds interesting, we'll keep an eye out for it. I don't think I've ever seen anything of Gaiman's but everyone keeps mentioning him. I'll have to go digging methinks :)

If you're still in touch with DF, you might want to let her know about Mirrormask too. IIRC, she loves Labyrinth and TDC and being a gothy sort of person would probably love it. Otherwise let me know and, if it's ok with you, I'll email her the link to this entry (or copy and past the text into the email if you prefer :)

I like some of his stuff better than others, but it's all worthwhile. I think you'll enjoy the results of your hunt! ;)

I haven't talked to DF in ages! Sure, tell her about it, and pass on the link, my email, whatever and have her say hi! And tell her I said hi in general! :D

Hey, Deef! Yay! Life's been interesting, but mostly in the Chinese sense (as in the curse, "May you live in interesting times!"). In fact, as soon as I'm done here I'm getting ready to go to court yet again. Gods. And I still have no job. Since November 2004, for those who are counting! *bangs head against wall* Still, I'm bound for things to start looking up! :D
