Just be straightforward and polite. Try to remember to smile a little hopefully. Don't immediately give both of you a way out like this:

"Do you want to go out to dinner? With friends! Do you want to go out with friends? Or not. Never mind. ::runs::"

Just be yourself and stick to simple words. He's probably scared too.
