Unless you are into high end gaming with high screen resolutions or do a lot of BOINCing with a CUDA app, I can't see you needing more than 512MB anyway.
I was looking at in terms of iRacing, which probably does qualify as high-end and screen resolution and stuff.
Frame-rate suffers if you turn on too much stuff, especially shadows. Mind, it's reasonable without shadows on, but still drops a bit in multi-car races.
Anyhow, looks like it's going to be a new card to upgrade from there, so thanks for the info. It'll not be happening before the winter solstice and associated jollities, that's for certain.
New minotaur is 1680x1050 which is what prompted this, together with the possibility (some time further ahead) of running more than one screen.

512MB is the maximum RAM on a 7900GTX.
