listening to Meatloaf's "Anything for love", I had the idea of putting together a compilation of all-time classic rock ballads.  Then I started thinking about what to put on it... any additions to the list are welcome

Animals: house of the rising sun - marginal, but it's a classic
Guns'n'Roses: Sweet child of mine
Dire Straits: Brothers in arms

and I thought of another characteristic: a decent instrumental break/solo.

I think you lost me with Meatloaf's Anything For Love: not only do I fundamentally disagree with the man (assuming "that" means what I think I heard he said it does) but I reckon it's one of those songs one can hear too often. Nowt against meatloaf - he was splendid in the Rocky Horror Picture Show and I'm sure he brings measureless pleasure to millions, just not with *that*.

well, the end of the song says "sooner or later you'll be screwing around, and I won't do that".

I'm guessing a bit but I reckon the "that" is various kinds of betrayal, and I'm OK with that.
