listening to Meatloaf's "Anything for love", I had the idea of putting together a compilation of all-time classic rock ballads. Then I started thinking about what to put on it... any additions to the list are welcome

I'll listen to anything for love, but not that...

I think you lost me with Meatloaf's Anything For Love: not only do I fundamentally disagree with the man (assuming "that" means what I think I heard he said it does) but I reckon it's one of those songs one can hear too often. Nowt against meatloaf - he was splendid in the Rocky Horror Picture Show and I'm sure he brings measureless pleasure to millions, just not with *that*.
Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple Landslide - Fleetwood Mac Suicide? - Barclay James Harvest Berlin - Barclay James Harvest Private Dancer - Tina Turner

Animals: house of the rising sun - marginal, but it's a classic
Guns'n'Roses: Sweet child of mine
Dire Straits: Brothers in arms
and I thought of another characteristic: a decent instrumental break/solo.

I'm guessing a bit but I reckon the "that" is various kinds of betrayal, and I'm OK with that.

Depends on your definition of a ballad innit :)
OK, withdraw that and substitute Lying eyes - The Eagles
