Elsabeth and i were walking back from the river along East River Road around 1:45 in the morning last night. She was startled, looked behind us and said, "Oh, there are people behind us," and laughed. At least we knew where that sound was coming from. I looked behind us and saw two black men, one was jogging. I kept thinking, "They're not going to mug us, you're overreacting, they're normal people like you and me and just because you see a black man coming towards you at night doesn't mean he's going to mug you, that's racist." When the jogging man caught up to us, he slowed down, stopped in front of us, and mugged us.

He waited until his buddy was behind us to pull out the knife and say, "Give us all your money." You know, all the cliché i'm-mugging-you phrases. A third guy showed up while the guy behind me was reaching into all my pockets. He found my camera, the only thing of value i was carrying (i thanked my luck that i forgot my wallet and cell phone in my room), took it. The guy with the knife pointed at my face was still telling us to give him our money, but neither of us had any. Elsabeth had an umbrella and her U-Card. The third guy reached into her back pocket and took out her U-Card pocket-wallet, searching for money. The guy with the knife yelled, "Take her credit card!" But she didn't have one. The third guy gave her back her U-Card (in a strangely polite manner), the second guy stopped fondeling me from behind, and they all ran away.

We walked the minute and a half to Middlebrook and reported the mugging to the security guards there. The police came, filed a report, and we went to bed.

By the way, last night, Elsabeth and i decided that we're boyfriend and girlfriend now. That was about fifteen minutes before we got mugged.

I'm infinitely grateful that we're both okay.

C'est tout.
