1) I think ley lines can actually be any number of things. Which doesn't help, but I mean that they can occur between magically or mythologically signifigant areas. The national road should have a ley line on it, for example. And perhaps smaller ley lines on major roads or paths in a city. But I can also see a ley line developing due to the resonance between two magical sites or two powerful mages, even ( ... )

1. Ley Lines should definitely follow natural terrain, and even man-made structures that have a significant effect on the environment, and have existed a significant amount of time. One idea I always got, especially with roads, was the ley lines formed because of the movement along those lines, of people, water, spirits, whatever, creating a sort of mystical *friction*, carrying resonance and energy along with them ( ... )

Why not use existing ley line maps? Take a look at VortexMaps.com, particularly at :

Power points of the Western US : http://www.vortexmaps.com/us-west-points.php

Geometry of the Eastern US :
http://www.vortexmaps.com/chaark.php

These provide points (terminus') for major ley lines, and give us convergence points. In other words, it gives us a starting point.

Some of the products they sell include poster-size maps of each of the areas. I'd be willing to foot the bill for these maps for each of the regions in the US, if you're all interested.

Ooooh....here's a list of gridpoints (i.e. major ley line junctions) for the globe with GPS coordinates....fun!

When I worked up the ley lines for Seattle I actually did some digging online as to what existing ley line maps were like. It was especially surprising to find an existing "real world" map; however, I did not feel that any of them really worked (especially since Seattle has a giant herking mystical site in the middle of it). Part of the reason being that real world ley lines are different in definition from WW ley lines. Another reason is that it made it almost too easy for PCs to get their hands on that information ( ... )

1. As strange as it sounds, I would suggest paying close attention to Stephen King's The Gunslinger series (books 3+) for a discussion of the Beams. Those sound very much like ley lines to me.
2. Following that, I would think that ley lines would tend to influence the construction of man-made objects as much as vice versa. So, some examples might be that Route 66 (DEFINITELY a ley line) might have been constructed on a ley line route rather than have become one afterwards. Promontory Point in Utah would be another example of two leys lines converging and drawing the railroads with them...
3. And my advice for going about the project would be about 2-3 per region, decided by National, then hand the results over to the RST/ARSTs, who would do Regional Ley Lines so that DSTs and VSTs would have more tools to work with at a local level.
