To be honest, it seems to be that education is pretty much for the rich only just about everywhere. Okay, so in Germany you don't pay University fees, so it's somewhat better, but studying while working enough hours to keep you going without help from your parents? That's a damn hard thing.

I admit I was lucky, but if I had been so lucky if I had been born in Britain? No idea.

No, that's the thing. You still end up paying the uni/govt - just later when you're making money. I managed five years on my own - I guess I can manage another one. I owe 35,000 dollars [AUS which is atm 75 US cents] atm so it's a nightmare... no one will lend me anything either.

You were lucky, but you still worked hard. It's just that some people (I have a very deserving intelligent friend in the US) just don't get the chance.
