So the latest cute thing teenaged yuppie larva are doing is setting their cellphones to a ringtone too high for most adults to hear. The ringtone is a piercing 17 kHz tone, and I was surprised to find I could not only still hear it, but it made me want to jam sharp pencils into my ears to make the sound stop. Huh. Eric and I could hear it too. Very, very annoying. Maybe we aren't old enough yet? The article suggested that you have to get to your 40s or 50s before you lose the high range of hearing.

yup, heard it. then again, i've always had a really high range of hearing. once, when i was in my early teens, my mom & stepdad & i went to the shakey's in bethesda, where they used to have those old iron sewing-machine pedals under some of the tables. a bunch of kids were pumping those pedals like mad, and it was making screeching noises about that high (maybe even a smidge lower), and it was causing me PAIN. my mom & stepdad had no idea what i was talking about when i tried to explain what the problem was. jesus.

now stuff at the bass end of things i have more trouble hearing. but i wouldn't be surprised if i could hear fucking dog whistles.
