I have already declined meeting him for lunch today, now he says to let him know when would be convenient. Never, as an answer, seems somewhat rude, but I really don't want a repear performance of last summer ( and the summer before). I could answer, only if you propose on that occassion and set a date for the wedding, that might scare him off, but you never know. Why couldn't he go and spend the summer with his family?

Isn't it maybe time you told him that, whilst he may be ok with continuing to see you, it is too difficult for you to do?

This might lead to a long discussion of why it is too difficult for me, and then he will feel guilty and I will feel guilty because he feels guilty and there is no need for him to feel guilty about me not being able to have an adult attitude towards the ex................
