In Character Information
character name: Giovanni Auditore da Firenze
Fandom: Assassin's Creed
Timeline: ...how do I put this gently...? He's dead.
character's age: 40
powers, skills, pets and equipment: As an Assassin from a hereditary line of such, Giovanni possesses standard Assassin abilities, such as Eagle Vision (a method of visually identifying secrets and enemies/allies) and a natural high level of physical prowess. He carefully trained as an Assassin in his youth, so his freerunning abilities are exceptional. He has great skill with many types of blades, favoring his hidden blade--a blade concealed in a specially designed vambrace--and a sword. Throwing knives, two shorter blades, and devastating charm (No, really. It's an Auditore thing) round out his arsenal.
For Scorched, his Eagle Vision will be upgraded to Eagle Sense, an ability that cones about in Assassin's Creed Revelations. It is basically a more finely-tuned version of Eagle Vision that allows the user to discern things more precisely and works better at a distance, as well as on inanimate objects.
canon history: The son of a wealthy banking family and younger brother to fellow Assassin (and mercenary) Mario Auditore, Giovanni's roots set him up for success and difficulty in spades. The entire family was made of Assassins, a line that spanned many generations and held secrets of treasures and dangers unknown to most of the world. And, under the guise of being a banker, he tried to give his family the best life he knew how.
Most of his history is explained in
this article. But the relationship between himself and his brother--who he sternly disagrees with on many fronts, and himself and his wife--who he dearly and passionately has loved from the first moment they met--is brushed a bit under the rug.
personality:
Family, justice, honor: These are the values guiding my blade... I am Giovanni Auditore, and, like my father before me, I am an Assassin.
Giovanni is a man of many secrets, a lover and a fighter in equal measure, and above all, fiercely protective of the people he loves. His heart is steadfast and he's quite sure of himself--in fact, he and Maria fall in love almost at first sight, and until his death they still love each other passionately and intensely. He shows incredible amounts of love for his children as well, smiling broadly and always being sure to teach them small life lessons with endless encouragement. He even pokes fun at his middle son, Ezio, for being such a playboy.
While lesser men might shrug off filial responsibilities, Giovanni sought to keep both the family business of banking and the just work of the Assassins strong. There's a fundamental ideological difference between himself (cool, level-headed) and his brother Mario (loud, forceful, asks questions later); though this causes them to live apart and rarely agree, Giovanni still assists his brother when the danger of an errand--namely, the fate of the Shroud of Turin--threatens more than just a single man. His loyalty in this and in his duties is what makes him such a trusted man in all areas of life. He's also quite loyal to both the Assassin cause and Lorenzo de Medici, as both are relationships and duties he inherited.
He cares more for his family than for anything else. Though his wife knows quite early of his duties as an Assassin--becoming one herself--he makes sure to maintain his banking business with the same dedication he shows to being an Assassin. In this way, he protects his own interests, making his family well-respected in Florence, and also gives them a stable veil to hide behind. In fact, he introduces his sons and daughter to that well before any of them learn of their Assassin heritage. He's careful to guard them from it: only the brash, bold Federico is even aware of their duties before the sons are seized for treason, and he takes to the task with all his father's devotion and pride. So, in this way, he protects not on their well-being, but also their hearts, waiting calmly for the precise moment to reveal their destiny.
An opportunist in other areas as well, Giovanni is the type of man who will stand back and observe, trying to uncover secrets and truths well before he acts. This is in stark contrast to his older brother, Mario, who seems more interested in hitting first and asking questions later. He doesn't enjoy violence, but he understands that extreme measures are required to fight extreme evils. What he does share with his brother, though, is an unflinching desire to fight the Templars, and the sworn oath to protect freedom and humanity at any cost. He lives by the Assassin's Creed:
Nothing is true; everything is permitted.
We work in the dark, to serve the light.
We are Assassins.
why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting? He's an Assassin. It's pretty much suited for a situation of high intrigue and mystery. Assassins are the seekers of truth, defenders of freedom, chaotic forces of will. He'll fit right in.

Giovanni crouched in complete silence at the edge of the rooftop, eyes fixed intently on a small shambling group of figures. Unfazed by the way their heads turned to and fro, casting menacing gazes through the streets of Anatole, he scrutinized their movements, the decisions they made.
This group, it seemed, had been terrorizing a small section of the town from night to night, ravenous and desperate to cause chaos more than anything. That kind of shallow, thoughtless behavior was the sort of thing Giovanni Auditore would never stand for.
So, with heart steeled and resources gathered, he'd set out to teach them a lesson, and to keep the already troubled residents from suffering one more night of uncertainty. His padded footsteps were near-silent on the rooftops as he crossed from one building to the next, impossibly half-crouched every time he came to a ledge. With every step, too, he centered himself, using every sense to gather information on his surroundings.
The sound of metal on wood caught his attention: he turned just in time to see a figure closing in fast, some sick, cobbled-together weapon in hand: one of the assailants he was hunting. But he had to be sure. Taking a short breath, he focused, and a red aura materialized around the man. This was Giovanni's target, then, and his calm, kind demeanor disappeared in an instant.
He stepped forward, drawing a short blade and thrusting it toward the man's wrist, intent on marring just enough flesh to make the man pause. It worked, as he thought it should. Now that he was close, it was almost laughable that such a terror could be so inept at fighting. Then again, as he'd heard, the fiends worked with numbers rather than skill, and he felt a hand grab his cape in short order.
With a cry of exertion, he turned on that man, too, offering a swift, crushing kick to the first assailant's knee while plunging his hidden blade into the other man's neck.
Anything else? Love, love me do. You know I love you.
