The following was an online comment to an opinion piece appearing today in The Badger Herald (The UW student newspaper). The opinion piece, ironically enough, had nothing to do with film nor Brokeback Mountain. It was actually celebrating effective steps taken by Students for a Fair Wisconsin in attempting to defeat the gay marriage ban referendum

Unfortunately, though, Ant, the person has a point, and I would tend to agree with him/her. Honestly, though, this specific argument kind of acts as a microcosm of many other arguments related to this point: that minorities "act out" in order to gain attention away from the majority and shift the limelight on themselves. A good example of this that has been around for a while now is the presence of Black mothers on welfare pumping out baby after baby to collect government money. How often is it that you hear a white person complaining about "damn black people that can't get a job & have a lot of kids" or whatever it might be. I think the person writing this piece has a point, and for a couple of years now I'm afraid the gay community might be headed down this road. Sure, we might have our constitutional rights in a decade or two, but are we going to be those people that everyone complains about? In twenty years are people going to be bitching in grocery stores about the gay people that want some special product? Possibly. It

Hmm. I feel one of the biggest issues with today's society is projecting the actions of a small group of people to an entire population of people, then blatantly generalizing them all to hell. I think its unfortunate and ironic that the writer demands the gay community show some respect for everyone else, especially if I infer he's some white guy.

Anyways, to mimic your point, I don't understand why gay marriage would be a big deal in any free country.
