Dude, if you "let down" anyone by trying to make yourself a better person, I'd wonder who those people were who felt let down. Whatever steps you take to make you a better person in your own eyes - those are important.

You'd be surprised. I'm a nice guy, I'm a doormat, and I always try to make people laugh & feel better about themselves. I've lost friends before when I wasn't able to do that. It's depressing to find out how few people in your life truly like you for who you are and not for what you do for them.

If people stop being your friend because you don't make them laugh and cheer them up all the the time then I say you're better off without them in the long run.
