A lot of readers (like me) really will pass over anything self-published. (See this Saturday Book Discussion.) The bottom line for me is this: I know there are good books being self-published, and of course I know that not every trade-published book is good, but the ratio of crap-to-gold in self-publishing is still pretty close to what it is on fanfiction.net. With trade-published books, at least I can find book reviews that will give me a reliable indicator of whether it's crap or not.
Literary fiction is a particularly tough sell in self-publishing right now. Most self-publishing success stories are genre fiction. (Nathan Bransford wrote a post on this recently.)
I admit, I have flirted with the idea of self-publishing the SF story I've been working on. I will probably at least try submitting it for commercial publication first, though.
