Math and things.

I had an interesting discussion with Jaime, Keith, Jenna, and Ronan last night before vampire on the subject of Dyson Spheres.

Now, because i am waiting for a plumber to come and there's no one around and I have nothing better to do, i decided to do some math and make a few comparisons.

Dyson Sphere Area: 2.9 x 10^20 km^2
Dyson Sphere Volume: 1.4137 ( Read more... )

A solid sphere is pretty astronomical.

One view of it I enjoyed was in the Hyperion Cantos, where it's a sphere of plant life, with a containment field to keep the atmosphere in, and comets acting as the rain.

The thing isn't a solid, true sphere, but it takes FAR less mass to make it work.

According to a little bit more reaserch, apparently there isn't enough material in our solar system to even make the damn thing..

The other makes a little more sense in terms of material wise.

And it's a good idea for extra living space. A "biosphere" like that can hold a tremendous amount of living matter.
