Hey everyone. Sorry for not being around as much (especially on MSN), but things have gotten extremely busy here in the last few weeks. I guess the first place to start was the week before the start of July.
I first want to get this out of the way.
At the start of the week before July I started working, but it wasn’t the main thing on my mind at the time. You see I have been preparing for something for this 1st weekend of July for a really long time and I was justifiably excited. That whole week I was just waiting for the weekend to arrive. It was also a terribly cold week, which left me to stand outside in the sun if I could and long for a hug from that special someone.
Eventually Friday came. My over excited and joyful arrival was met with a heartbreaking and depressing reception. It was a bittersweet event…No, more bitter than sweet. My plans did go forward, but it hardly met with its intention or what I would like to have happened. To put it short; it was a flop. One that ties to the past and drags heavy on my heart. That being said, I don’t regret it. I did what I felt was right and the reason for it all was (and will always be) worth it.
Yet, it didn’t help my mood. As I was struck with sudden (yet predicted) depression, which was accompanied by chest pains and anxiety attacks. Something I was all to use to earlier this year.
My mother then left for England on the 4th of July to visit my sister. She was worried sick about me after being practically comatose and glum up to now. I hate it how much these things affect not only affect me, but the people in my life. Also she is almost the only person that shows signs of affection in my life.
I was then unfortunate to get bitten by a tick at work during that first week, which gave me “Tick Bite Fever”. The symptoms of note were vomiting, headaches and sweating. Symptoms I mistook as a result from being worked up after the weekend. It was finally diagnosed when I stumbled to the ground and vomited at home. My father took me to the Medi-Clinic, where as far as they can tell was “Tick Bite Fever”. I was monitored for a while, received medication and was slowly improving.
Not exactly a good start, huh? :/
Anyway, lets move on to my actual job.
For a long while now, I’ve been a free lance graphic designer with my hands in all types of multimedia. A producer heard of me through talks with my father and has asked me to join his team to produce the 1st CGI animated movie in South Africa for and international release.
Naturally, I was more than excited to join. However he wanted me to be part of his core team. Which meant he really wants me to stick around till the film is done. A five to six year project. I was hesitant, because I wanted to go to America soon and eventually meet up with somebody. However after the weekend, I had no more dreams or ambitions. It was like “Hey, what now?” Everybody pushed me to take this job while I was hesitant and things always seem to work out for me if decided by somebody else. A fact I especially hate.
So, with nothing to lose (and after a week test run), I joined the core team for the movie. I really cant talk about it since I’m under contract. I can say however that the film is based on a true South African story set in the 1870’s and is animal related. Our studio is currently our boss’s guest house, with two large rooms and one bathroom on his property at Eden. Eden is of course is a Nature Reserve with a couple of wild animals (mostly herbivores) where you can set up a house at a hefty price. Incidentally enough I’ll be moving there later this year. It also where I got bitten by a tick. :x
The REAL studio is being built proper just up the road outside of Eden. It will have great facilities and accommodation for the staff.
Currently we are a small team, which our boss will hope to increase significantly in the coming months.
So do I like it?
Well… it’s going kind of alright. I’ve hit it off really well with my co-workers and have quickly became friends with them. When I began the job, I was assigned to be the head texture artist with a protégée to help me out and to educate. I get a lift with one of my coworkers to Eden in the mornings, which means I miss out on breakfast. Sometimes we work so late, leave so late that I naturally get home late. 2 hours late. :/
My biggest gripe however is that I’m just constantly busy. In the time that I’ve been there, I’ve added more repertoires to than just being a texture artist, those which included was team leader, creative director, concept artist, quality control, research, tutor and coffee guy. Apparently people noticed my eye for detail and gave me all this responsibility, something I really could do without to be honest.
So in a day I’m doing my main job of being a texture artist, while taking on all these other responsibilities, getting bugged to help, critique and approve my coworkers’ work.
It’s quite hectic, but you know. I somewhat enjoy it; it helps you forget about the emotional pain for a while. At least until somebody plays The Shins, James Blunt or Nine Inch Nails. Then I just have to go and take a break for a while.
Eventually after or around 7pm I get home, where I start to do either more work on the project or work on briefs from clients with my graphic design job. So I’m working two jobs now. Something my boss doesn’t like, he wants me to be committed to this movie. So I might have to stop with the graphic design at some point.
Between 7 and 10-ish; I work, eat, shower and spend very little time online before going to bed to ensure I don’t wake up exhausted the next day. Luckily in the mornings while getting ready for work, I can get online and have some “free time”.
I get Saturdays and Sundays off if we are ahead of our schedule, so I can enjoy some online and leisure time then.
That’s all for now. I’m busy, upset with a lot of things, happy about a few and miss you people. I’ll see you guys around the weekend.
P.S. It’s freaken cold here and I never got that genuine hug that I wanted from “someone”. ;_;
