I'm not sure how I feel about this article. For one thing, using somebody's innocent photos (presumably when people are photographing themselves in swimsuits at the beach they are doing it without the assumption that guys will be looking at it like porn) as fantasy material is creepy and voyeuristic to the nth degree. But on the other hand, this doesn't ring true to me. I can see maybe a similar phenomenon with Myspace, where there are loads of "famous on the internet" women and teenage girls posting panty shots and the like, but this Facebook thing? Doesn't sound real to me. Maybe I just know a different breed of men, though.
I can see how porn being blocked by school/work networks means Facebook is one of the only sites they can get to (if it's not blocked!) but I'm torn - on the bright side, these are real humans that are posting their own content so they're not being paid, forced or coerced into the content they post. Pervs may look at a profile photo but at least stalkers can be blocked from a "friends list" even if not all privacy settings are stellar. Alas, it's creepy thinking casual acquaintances and their imagination are having too much fun with your photos. And the "friend mongers" who will friend anyone and have billions of "friends" on fb... it might as well be a singles site anyway.
Most of my photos (profile and otherwise) are of my puppy. Or my husband. Or my puppy with my husband. Or me, very covered, and with the puppy and husband. Le sigh.
I think it's obvious that when women post bathing suit pictures of themselves on facebook or myspace etc (I know a few women who post "modeling" shoots of themselves, where they are trying to titillate in an obvious way) that they are trying to drum up attention - usually male attention. That is exactly why I won't do it (it's a pet peeve of mine and really annoying, haha). It just comes off as desparate to me. I know women who post pictures of themselves pretending to make out with their friends at bars and shit - it's just so obvious to me what they are attempting to do (none of them are lesbians or bisexual) get male attention. Although, I'm not sure they suspect men would jerk off to them. Most of the men I know who are into porn though (which is a good 75% at least) wouldn't get off on pictures like this, they want to see the action - hardcore porn.
