So, like every other sane person out there, I've been watching Fringe, and I think the latest episode has sparked a fair bit of discussion, and while I do have theories and all that, flatlined  just linked me to a post on Peter's role in the most recent season, and I had thoughts. And they're going to go under a cut to save your flists. Probably also going ( Read more... )

It's like you opened my brain and stole my thoughts. Well, you worded them a lot better than I would have, but THOUGHT STEALER.

I'M SORRY. IT'S BECAUSE I'M LIKE SIMON FROM LAST NIGHT'S EPISODE AND I CAN'T HELP HEARING PEOPLE'S THOUGHTS.

This show is making me...nervous.

Me too. I mean, I'm of the opinion that this whole Peter having to choose an Olivia is a fake-out, because you know, don't trust Sam Weiss, but if it's not that I'm just going to ... sit over here in the corner, catatonic, until it's over.

you won't be sitting in that corner by yourself, I think I'm already sitting there! I'm trying as hard as possible to continue having faith in the writers and wait and see what they do. But I'm afraid. I really am afraid of what they'll do next...

Oh good. At least I won't be lonely. :) I agree completely. The only reason why I'm not already in the corner, keeping you company, is that I just can't believe that this is the route we're going to go down, because the writers have been amazing thus far. I'm just going to go with the theory that Sam is just telling us/Nina this for his own purposes, or to galvanise somone into action. Yes. :)

I do think she's a bit in love with him

See, that right there? Sure. A bit. That's fine. I just don't how we got to this point where she loves him so much that it hurts this much.

Leaving you another link because other people are always better at putting my thoughts into words than I am.

BUT WE CAN DISAGREE. THAT'S FINE. I am used to being unpopular opinion girl.

Incidentally, I watched The Equation over dinner and HEY, IT'S BRITTA PERRY BEING ALL EVIL WITH FLASHY CHRISTMAS LIGHTS AND GETTING HERSELF KILLED.

SURE WE CAN DISAGREE, BUT ONLY IF IT MEANS I'M RIGHT AND YOU'RE WRONG. JUST KIDDING. :) I'm not sure how the Peter/Olivia got this far either. The way I explain it in my head is that her hurt about him and Altliv is just the embodiment of her hurt that no one knew her well enough to know the difference. I don't really know - I guess I need to see how it all pans out. DON'T LET ME DOWN, FRINGE WRITERS.

And is it just me, or do you get a strangely familiar/maternal vibe from Nina Sharp when she's talking to Olivia? Like she knows her before or something?

A bit. But I get nothing but strange vibes from Nina Sharp. WHY WON'T THEY JUST TELL ME WHAT HER DEAL IS?

I guess they have to keep some things for the season four we will definitely be getting. ;)

I really love the way you laid this out.

I think it had to be Peter who was her anchor. John and Charlie are important parts of her past, but that's just it: they're past. She may not be over their deaths, but she's found some sort of peace with them. Ella and Rachel are her emotional touchstones (and yes, it was awesome that talking to Ella finally snapped her back), but on some level they've always been the people who she had to protect, the people who she had to be strong for. Season 2, however, spent much time building up to the idea that Peter was the one person Olivia trusted enough to talk to when she's scared, the one person she was willing to show that sort of vulnerability to. Maybe some of it was love, but I think most of it was trust and family. She saw him as an equal, and although she's spent more time rescuing him, I think some part of her trusted that he would do the same for her and that translated to Peter being the external embodiment of her attempt to regain herself ( ... )

No, I love long comments, mostly because I'm terribly verbose myself. ;) Especially since I completely agree with you. When I first watched, I just accepted it when Peter became her emotional anchor, and now, given the last episode, I guess everyone's just talking about things, and one of the things being how did Peter become so important to Olivia. And yeah, I agree completely with how you've explained it. And I just feel so hurt for her, and it's so painful watching her go through all this, and you know, she's still trying to work through things and sometimes it all just gets the better of her ( ... )

I actually like Olivia's erratic behavior. The healing process isn't linear; some days are good and she thinks she's put everything behind her, some days everything she just smacks her in the face and she can't deal and everything's an awkward mess. Two steps forward, one step back.

Of course, I'm guessing Alt!Olivia in her brain certainly isn't helping matters.

I'm wondering if Olivia's biggest problem isn't the destruction of a potential love affair, but the betrayal of friendship and trust. Peter, who has arguably become the person she trusts and probably her best friend (that's my read of what's been building for the last couple seasons), didn't even notice she was gone; even if they hadn't been about to embark on a relationship, that would be a hell of a kick to the gut.

I'm still blinking at Peter missing the significance of the change in coffee. Changes in mood? Yeah, okay, he wanted to believe he was having an effect and Olivia was in love. Changes in coffee from what Olivia had been drinking for two years prior? ( ... )

Mm, I was quite surprised at Peter missing the significance of the coffee as well. I mean, for someone who's supposed to be a genius, he just really didn't get it. Which makes me think that he didn't really want to? And if you look at this whole mess from Peter's point of view, it's also quite tragic. I think he ... I think he wants a place, a sense of belonging as much as Olivia does. If you look at his nomadic background - how he's been wandering around since, I assume, his mother died and his father went into the asylum, you can really see why that might be. And he'd just found out that Walter wasn't really his father, that he'd stolen him from his 'real', biological family - you can sort of see him thinking - well, is that why I haven't found a place where I belong? And then Olivia comes over and is all, you belong with me, and that - that seems to be his answer. He has a place ( ... )
