Fan Portraits Up

Aug 19, 2009 08:16

I did do a hundred and fifty one individual portraits of fans on Saturday (I was the guy at the top of the escalators)

All these images are up on flickr now. Take a look, comment on your favorites. Over the next few months I'll be contacting a bunch of the people here and doing interviews with them and putting up a grand web site and a Very ( Read more... )

I wish I'd been able to slow down long enough to participate. (Saturday was one of my busier running around days.) Excellent photos!

*waves* HI there, you took my portrait and I love it. It's posted to my LJ already if you want to check it out. I'll add you today, I don't think you have me down as an LJ friend yet.

Thanks for taking the photos! It was nice meeting you in Montreal =)

Hmm, I know I had my photo taken but I don't see it in the set. I do the my boyfriend's photo, who was with me and right after me. Odd.

A bunch were left out of the set by mistake; they seem to be there now.

Hm. I don't know whether my "pro" status kind of exempted me from the "fan" set but I was practically the first photo that was taken and *I* am definitely not there (but Scalzi is, which puts the pro theory in doubt, somewhat...)

something, btw, that interests me about the picture set is...there are a lot more *fat* women in fandom, but almost every woman who I see in the picture set is a size 20, and more are smaller. I know that there were of course a number of reasons to not get your picture taken (i had read about it and wanted to do it, but totally forgot until I saw it happening), but I do find it interesting that the opt in nature of this project actually shows a slimmer section of fandom than exists. This isn't an issue with you by any means, but instead with plus size fandom; we seem to be less likely to do anything that might put our bodies on display for the criticism that it might engender (knowing that your project *would* be posted to the web).

I know that this, in the mundane world, was one of the reasons for Leonard Nimoy's laid-back yet confrontational Full Body Project, but I did find it a little interesting in context of a fannish setting.

I kind of agree but I think it's more complicated than that. Fandom does have some very skinny people, and then there are those who seem "normal" on the outside. Another factor is the expertise of the photographer. He's really capturing his subjects at their best. I was comparing his portraits with snapshots of the same people, at the same con, taken by fans with good cameras who know what they are doing. The snapshots don't look bad (except for the ones of me), but they don't look that good either. For the portraits it looks like the fans are standing straighter, they are more graceful, and they are energized and engaged. Everyone looks awesome.
