Learn Neuroscience in 30 seconds!

Apr 28, 2004 21:17

Having been revising the Neuroscience part of my course for some time, I have realised the true underlying simplicity behind it all and have, out of a sense of goodness made it so even PHYSICISTS can impress all the Biology chicks with their superlative knowledge of Brain Science. Want to know more? Of course you do!

Everything is done by REFLEXES.

Reflexes consist of NEURONES which connect a STIMULUS receptor to a RESPONSE effector.

These neurones have gaps in them called SYNAPSES which allow the electrical transmission to be halted by INHIBITORY NEURONES acting on the far side of the gap.

Errr....

This isn't enough for a degree course, lads...

Um....

All the neurones have NAMES.

These are not the kind of names that are easy to remember.

They are the OTHER KIND.

They are not named using the same, or even a similar CONVENTION.

Or even language.

They are named due to their location, or structure, or function, or discoverer, or an animal, or some other reason.

Hey, it seemed a good idea at the time.

These names all have ACRONYMS.

These acroyms are not made by the same convention either and show no RHYME or REASON.

Many of these acronyms are THE SAME.

All the synapses have names (see above convention rules).

These names also have acronyms (see above)

All the locations where these synapses are have NAMES and ACRONYMS.

The pathways the neurones take also have names and acronyms.

As do the areas where the neurones tend to congregate.

You must LEARN all these names and acronyms.

All of them.

For NO GOOD REASON.

Congratulations. You are now a Brain Scientist!
