Summary: Draco receives more letters from his old connections of the Death Eaters, and decides to ask Astoria a very important question.
Draco was pacing back and forth in his library. Finally things were starting to get really complicated in his family. His uncle was writing him letters almost daily, asking him kindly to come back to the fold. Draco finally told his mother about Rudolphus, and she was also very concerned about what they mean for their family. Narcissa was worried that if Draco didn’t join they would become targets. She knew what they were capable of, and she knew that Draco was finally getting away from the life that she had provided him.
He worried that he was going to put Astoria in the line of fire as well. She had been a target of the death eaters in the past, he had even gathered intell on her that led to her kidnapping, although she still didn’t know about that. Draco was deeply concerned that she would leave him if she found out, so he did his best to keep it from her. Whenever she asked about the death eater days of his past he tried to avoid the subject, but with his uncle in the mix, things were getting so much more complicated.
Astoria was coming over after classes, and he was going to tell her all about this letters and threats. Also he was starting to have a feeling that someway, somehow his aunt was involved in all this. He knew that she had died, he had seen Molly Weasley kill her in the middle of great hall, but he also knew his uncle, and he did nothing without his wife. Rudolphus was weak, barely a man without the assistance of his wife. There was no way that he was mastermind material, not without Bellatrix at his side. He pushed the thought aside and tried to think through how he was going to tell Astoria his plan.
He sat in his chair by the fire and waited for her to arrive. As the sun went down he heard her enter his library. “Hey there, Blondie,” she said as she placed a kiss on his forehead. Draco shied away from her kiss, always thinking the forehead kiss was too motherly, but he didn’t feel like arguing with her, especially tonight.
“How were the kids today?” Draco asked, now that he was trained in the proper etiquette in relationships. He had been awful at asking her those normal questions, having been raised without those common decencies. His father always believed that they were a waste of time.
“They were angels, as always,” she told him with a laugh as she sat on his lap. Draco smiled at her before the frown took over his face again. Astoria knew that it wasn’t a good sign when he made that face. “What’s wrong baby?”
Draco didn’t know where to start. He wanted to be able to tell her everything, but that wasn’t going to keep her safe. It would be more selfish than anything, since it would scare her to know that Bellatrix was alive, especially when it was just a passing paranoid thought. “I got another letter from my uncle.”
Astoria didn’t want to seem that surprised, she was more worried for Draco than anything else. The more he heard from his uncle the more anxious and off he became. Finally when things were starting to work out between the two of them the Death Eaters had to come in and complicate things. “What did it say? Just that he wanted to have you back?” she asked, trying not to seem too alarmed.
“Yeah, it’s just getting more frequent and after stealing the Potter kid, I just don’t know what they are up to,” Draco explained. He still held back the part about his aunt, it was just a passing thought.
Astoria stood up and started to walk along the row of books, running her hands across their bindings. She hated the idea of danger reaching them, infiltrating the life that they were just starting to create together. She turned back and looked at Draco, the worried lines taking over his forehead. “What are you thinking?” she said to him with a worried tone.
Draco stood up and took her hands in his. He just wanted to make sure that nothing happened to the two people that he loved. “Astoria, I want you to come and live here with me.”
Astoria’s face broke out into a wide grin. She had been hoping that he would make another step in their relationship. Astoria knew that a lot of this was new and different for Draco, but it was for her as well. She hadn’t really had great role models for loving relationships either, at least Draco knew that his mother cared about him greatly. The difference between them was that she was more optimistic at the opportunity of finding love than he was. Draco hadn’t believed it to be possible for him to fall in love at all, yet here he was falling fast for Astoria.
Then doubt started to flood her brain. He was only asking her this because he believed that their lives were in danger. If it wasn’t for this string of letters that he was getting from his uncle there was no reason for him to ask her such a thing. Even though they had been spending every night together for the last month or so, but did he really see their relationship in the same light that she did? She wanted this to be for the long haul, she had seen them getting married and having children and all that, but what did he want?
“Are you only asking me this because you want to keep me safe?” Astoria asked nervously.
Draco had seen the drastic change in her expression. His own smile had disappeared with hers. He had wanted this for awhile, it was just that the situation had just presented itself that allowed him to ask. There wasn’t any way of telling that to her without her believing that he was doing this because he wanted it, but he would at least give it a try. “Astoria, it’s not like that. I want you to live with me officially,” Draco told her, staring into her brown eyes. “Forever. Frankly, you already live here, it would just mean actually moving your things here. There’s a walk in closet with your name on it I know you have been eyeing, so what do you say?”
Astoria looked at him, trying to determine if he was lying or not. She had wanted that closet, there was a great shoe rack in there and with a few improvements could hold all her shoe collection. She didn’t know what it was about Draco that made her always assume that he had an ulterior motive, maybe she was placing too much on his past.
“Yes. I say yes, silly. I have only been waiting for you to ask for a few months,” she said with a smile. She sat back down on his lap and placed a kiss on his lips, throwing her arms around his neck. “But if I am living here we are going to make a few changes to this old place. It lacks that home feel, and I know your mum wants to redecorate as well. I expect full cooperation on your part, mister,” she said with a firm tone.
Draco shook his head. He was expecting something along those lines when he asked her to move in. There were entire wings of the house that have been untouched for years, and his mother had been begging for him to help clean out some of the old rooms. Now that the store was up and running he might be able to have the time to actually start helping, that is if he found a good employee to run the store. After a series of interviews he still hadn’t found anyone that he deemed reliable to trust with the new store.
“I guess I could do that, if I find someone to help run the store,” he told her, wrapping arms around her waist. “Maybe if we get a wing clean we can prepare it for our kids, the ones we are adopting,” he made sure to add.
A smile took over Astorias face as she leaned down to kiss him again, this time much deeper than before. They were going to be a family, a real family, something neither of them had ever really experienced before.
