How did I turn into one of *those* people?

All of a sudden, I'm against dog breeders. This is somewhat strange, as we got Chasse from a breeder, but yeah...I found myself just now arguing vehemently with Crazy Dave about how he should just get a German Shephard from a shelter for cheap instead of shelling out $750 for a purebred, pedigreed dog ( Read more... )

Having volunteered at the SPCA and then with a local rescue group, I firmly agree with your pro-adoption stance. However, not all breeders are bad. I have nothing against breeders who do the necessary health testing and selective breeding to improve their breed. Mutts aren't for everyone. And having now shelled out a couple of grand for genetic medical problems for my two badly bred shelter-mutts, I can definitely see the draw of a dog with a health guarantee that lasts the LIFETIME of the dog. I'd love to know with almost certainty that elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, and knee problems are not likely to happen in my dog.

I do, however, have a severe dislike for people who breed their dogs carelessly. Accidental litters, breeding expensive mutts (anything-a-poo pretty much qualifies), or breeding because that's just what you do with dogs are all HUGE mistakes in my book. and, unfortunately, most of the breeders people find are these Back Yard Breeders who are not in it for the breed, but in it for stupid reasons.

I am very pro-genetic diversity... The fact that bull dogs require such artificial means for propagation creeps me out, and that they had to add some diversity back into Siamese breeds so they wouldn't become too corrupt... Plus they're cheaper.

My grandfather was a dog trainer. He felt that every dog was special and was not into breeding at all.

My thought is that every dog needs a home and there's WAY too many dogs that need a loving owner so why should we breed? Are we too picky as a society?

What gets me are those that breed and take their dogs to a show and parade them around but to the enjoyment of the owner and not the dog.

I want to say to these dog show people "How would you like it if I had a child born and then dressed it up and paraded it around?"

Wait, that's been done. See Benet, Jon.
