Here's a question for all you Live Journal-y folks. I just had a depressing conversation with a co-worker about the police in Denver covering/brutalizing the protests at the DNC which segued neatly into a rant about the erosion of our civil liberties, the rise in unthinking dictatorship tendencies in America, that sort of thing. Voter registration drives are probably the most effective thing you can do right now. Throwing vegetables at government buildings and acting like an ass in front of news cameras makes headlines, but getting people into the voting booth actually makes change.

I'm going to cry bullshit on the other commenters. Voting is about the least effective form of political participation. By the time it gets to a vote, the issue is already decided. The bigger a difference you want to make, the earlier in the decision making process you have to go. Primary votes are more meaningful than general election votes, but they are still late in the game ( ... )
