Summary: In which Ryu has a strange encounter in the park, and collects a puzzle and a gun shot wound.
In the middle of the park the dark seemed to take on an almost living presence. Ryu paused under a full-leafed sakura tree to breathe it in, absently waving back his two bodyguards who’d automatically tensed and reached into their jackets.
They were far enough from the city lights for Ryu to make out a few stars in the night sky; it had been a hot, clear day, and the cicadas were just beginning to stir from their heat-drugged haze and fill the air with noise. It wasn’t enough to hide the sound of footsteps on the grass.
Ryu turned and raised an eyebrow.
The face was instantly recognisable from reports: Renjo Kyu, one of the youngest of the detectives at DDS, and the one identified by their intelligencers as most likely to be named Dan’s successor. But the mixture of misery and determination was not one he had ever seen in any of the clandestine pictures of the boy’s face.
It was a mystery, nearly as much a one as what the detective was doing out in the middle of the park at this time of night, just where he might encounter the head of Pluto’s operations in New York. Ryu felt a slight stirring of interest through his usual apathy.
“Kyu-san,” he acknowledged coolly, sensing his bodyguards stiffen behind him. “You are a long way from home.”
Kyu stopped in his tracks and stared at him. He licked his lips. “Ryu,” he said, after a moment.
Folding his arms Ryu rested his weight back on one foot, making a note to find and deal with whoever had leaked his plans for tonight. Although he was curious to discover what Kyu’s were; the detective didn’t strike him as suicidal.
“That is somewhat presumptuous of you for a first meeting, Kyu-kun,” he commented.
Kyu’s face seemed to stiffen, yet at the same time a terrble release came into his eyes. Watching, wary, Ryu thought it looked something like the way one of Pluto’s clients would looked, decided finally on a course of action. “You won’t be able to forget me this time Ryu.” Kyu raised his hand.
It took Ryu a moment to make out what it was that he held, and that moment was just long enough; even as pain exploded in his shoulder and he staggered backwards, clutching at it, falling, at part of his mind was still insisting
Through the darkness creeping upon his vision he saw Kyu drop the gun and back away, his face stricken; saw his bodyguards leap on him. He was just able to give the order, through the growing haze, that the detective was not to be harmed. He was unconscious before he was able to wonder why.
