Affiliation: Team Rocket.

Personality:
There’s no question of Clive’s astounding intellect. In fact, he turns out to be the villain within the villain, duping even the evil mastermind behind the time travel project in Layton’s third adventure, the Unwound Future. Dedicating his life to revenge, Clive had all the time in the world to concoct a scheme so convoluted that it even puzzled the great Professor Layton; so, naturally, one can only assume that he’s not only a brilliant young man, but also patient and crafty. The only flaw in his genius is that he shows signs of being quite insane, for a lack of a better term. His logic is skewed by hatred and single-minded vengeance: for example, in order to cure London of its evil and corruption, he planned to level it completely-that is, destroy the city and everyone in it. As someone who detests violence against the innocent, this seems outlandish and contradictory. Still, Clive believed he was in the right, and that everyone would benefit from his actions.

He’s a leader, able to maintain the loyalty of even Dimitri’s goons, likely through the use of his massive inheritance and promises for the future. His acting skills and ability to lie effortlessly are also unparalleled, as he is able to fool the professor and his apprentice into thinking that he’s an older version of Luke. The ultimate focus of his plans, even past revenge and hatred, is to find justice in the face of corrupt scientists and politicians. He hates them, blaming the evils of the world for their selfish and greedy actions. Again, however, he fails to see how his own construction of a massive weapon and plans to obliterate London also reflect this same sort of selfish behaviour.

Essentially, though, his short-sightedness, despite being a product of his insanity, also stems from the fact that his growth wasn’t typical of most children. He was forced to mature all at once after seeing his parents die, and was thrust into a cold world in which he had to pretend to be a gentleman, the well-mannered and handsome boy of a very rich woman. He didn’t grow up well, though he did grow up, and it left a deep-seated darkness in him. His only hope for closure came from a man he met at the explosion, a man who held him back as he listened to his mother screaming in agony as she died. This man, Professor Layton, instilled in him a small hope that was left dormant, but never truly faded away.

But Clive isn’t evil. The older couple that he hired to work in the clock shop attest to that when Clive begins to run amok in his machine; they claim that he has a good heart and has been trampled on by the world until he reached his breaking point. It’s true--he is, deep down, a person who only wants what’s best for the world and for others. So, it’s unfortunate that his madness has caused him to enact his plans for the betterment of humankind in a less than favourable manner. He secretly wished, even, that the professor, the man who had saved his life ten years ago, would save him again by “talking him down” from his schemes.

Bitter, broken, and fuelled by hatred, Clive is perceived as evil and ruthless. However, at the very core of things, this isn’t even close to the truth. He was a young boy who had his life snatched from him before it had even hardly begun, and the madness that gripped him soon after caused him to become obsessed with the idea of revenge. But really, his only wish is to be saved, to be understood and bettered, though this can be lost beneath his cold insanity. Calculating and cool at the best of times, he is an excellent liar, but when provoked or pulled out of his own realm of control, he becomes unstable. Clive is a wonderful example of a complex character that can come to be expected from the realm of Professor Layton.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Clive is both mentally and physically inclined. He’s resourceful, clever, and quite good at fooling others into believing whatever he’d like them to. However, his madness is a severe handicap, causing his logic and reason to be skewed. Being somewhat of a sociopath, he has a shallow sense of love or family, though he dearly wishes that he could be saved from this. His passion for justice and revenge is blinding, and was his ultimate downfall in the end.

His fears involve his parents’ death, and he has a strong distaste for violence against the weak and innocent. After all, he instructed his goons, no matter what they did, to never harm the professor or his companions, even though he was battling against them.

Samples
First Person Sample:
[ the feed opens on a boy in his early twenties looking quite calm, all things considered. he’s decked out in a page boy hat and a very formal looking blazer and tie, having refused to change into his team rocket attire. He clears his throat politely, touching the brim of his hat as though anchoring himself to the moment. ]

Pardon me, but would anyone here be kind enough to tell me what’s going on here? My name is Luke Triton, and I urgently need to return to London. If anyone listening to this broadcast has any information they’d be willing to part with, I’d be very much obliged.

[ he smiles, but it doesn’t quite reach his eyes. after a moment, the video simply cuts out. ]

Third Person Sample:
The last thing he remembered was a man in a top hat summoning him to the Thames Arms. He claimed he’d discovered something important, and Clive didn’t think to be at all concerned; after all, he’d taken the idea into consideration that Layton would discover Dimitri’s plot-all he would have to do then was to pretend to be some sort of foolish actor hired at gunpoint for the scientist’s sinister purposes. It was all so easily accomplished, going so according to plan-

And then he woke up to a world quite unlike his own, with news that he scarcely believed. A world inhabited by things called Pokemon? An assignment to a nefarious group called Team Rocket?

“This is...completely ridiculous,” he told himself. “I can’t believe it.”

But the pokeball...it contained one of these creatures, allegedly, and he turned it in his hand as though concerned that, should he try to open it, he would be consenting to the theory that all of this was actually happening. Of course this was some sort of dream, though he couldn’t imagine why he would be sleeping-certainly not in the Thames Arms. Had someone poisoned his tea? Certainly Dimitri wouldn’t think to do something like this; after all, they were partners...

It was a long time before Clive finally relented to the allure of what the ball may truly hold. And if this was a dream, he could come to little harm, even if it was a trap. There seemed to be no other answer to this puzzle than to follow the instructions he had been given, no matter how loathe he was. A single, hesitant finger found the button fitted on the front of the ball, and he was almost immediately greeted by a flash of light. Startled, he stumbled backwards, only to be met with the sight of a bizarre creature blinking back at him with curious eyes.

“What are you?” the young man questioned incredulously after a moment of silence. The Pokemon only replied with a boisterous “Sneasel!”, to which Clive’s expression hardened as he approached it with a studious expression. He chuckled humourlessly.

“I suppose I’ve got no choice but to accept that this is really happening,” he resolved, bringing his hand to his mouth in thought. “You--pokemon.” He paused, then shook his head blithely. “No, that’s not right, is it? I suppose if you’re to accompany me, you’ll need a name. But for now, I’d like to know exactly what’s going on here. I don’t entirely trust this information I’ve been given, and I hardly think I’m going to follow some sort of corrupt operation blindly.”

Clive directed his gaze to the only door that would lead him away from this place. Arriving to some new world inexplicably, lost with no knowledge of what was happening in London without him...he would admit: this was quite the puzzle.
